Guy, your assumptions are correct, a little bit of overkill, but to ere on the side of safety is good. As Jimmy would say "just ride it"

Thanks for the replys, the crankcase is OK. The starter when hooked up to the battery directly and off of the engine spins so hard and fast that it gave me a blister thru my leather gloves while trying to hold the gear on the end of the shaft, so that makes me think the starter has lots of tourqe an...

The Sportster (90th anniv edition) was painted the orange and cream colour (think of a creamsickle) and was only a 2.5 so I got an larger 3.3 aftermarket tank and painted all the tins dark purple (think eggplant)
The 97 883 is black (pic's on my w-site)

If y'all really need to ride this thing (to keep the "XLS" pristine) then could ya fill it with gas and put in an on-line filter and just ride? Shakin' and a movin' may help dissolve 'er out? Or use a plastic gas tank in the meantime? No Honda used tank here but I do have one from a '93 XL.

Never heard a "cheen" before but check out my recent thread for some good areas to look at offered by the experts here. I've eliminated everything except the actual wire going to the starter from the relay, all others have been bypassed, will continue work on it tonight. My problem is that...

I had marked the case before I took it apart (3x's now) and it spins clockwise when loking at the shaft as it should, thanks.

Update guys,
Hooked the starter directly up to the battery and while holding the shaft it almost wore thru my leather gloves!
Lot's of torque, so it must be in the wires somewhere???

Not much torque while running off the bike with a battery charger attached? Guess i'll try it hooked up to the battery direct.

Got it apart again, everything looks good and clean, the + wire is hooked up tight to the brush, lots of brush left on both.
