I know you said you just replaced the rings, but what is the compression looking like? Also have you taken a look at the reeds, I hear if they are jammed way open it isn't going to start.

But did you actually check to make sure you had spark?

Why don't you want to take the engine off? If you have the exhaust off, it is just another two bolts, the tire and the brake line to have it off. Seems to me like that would be easier than trying to finagle your way to the exhaust port with the engine still on.

So I have the nut off now, but like you said the flywheel is being a bugger. I can't get the thing to wiggle a bit, any ideas as how I can get it off. Unfortunately I called all the shops around here and they all went 'whats a flywheel puller?' , so I can't find one of those very easily.
