Although I prefer the other variant of the Gyro, I'd say $500 is wortwith it. If it has been sitting forever (bad tires, brakes, dirty carb, rusty tank, etc...) and has 5k+ miles, I'd talk him down.

How clean was the carb? Was it gummed up? Check the fuel filter, tank, and fuel lines for debris. Check the airbox as mine will always bog down / die off at WOT when there is something wrong with the air box.

I would make sure that your airbox is sealed and mounted properly.

Sure sounds like the grand kids trashed it. It's not just external damage you have to worry about, but also internal given the age, miles, and children forgetting to put oil in it from time to time. You're looking at $250-300 in parts, repair, paint, time, etc. You may as well spend $400-500 on some...
