Re: Poor Man's Bearing and Crank Install Ideas?
We'll get there one day. We're actually contemplating moving back to a larger city, probably New Orleans, for our careers. Then to Western NC or the Pacific NW for retirement...if that's still around when we're old enough. When I moved here there was no Harbor freight in the state. But the wife and ...

Re: Poor Man's Bearing and Crank Install Ideas?
Closest one's about 70 miles away. That's beautiful, by the way. You made a much nicer trade off for no HF than I did. Thanks. I miss living in a town with a HF. I'll add that one to my list for next time I make a run down to the coast or to NOLA. NO HARBOR FREIGHT! My God man move to civilization, ...

Re: Poor Man's Bearing and Crank Install Ideas?
Thanks. I miss living in a town with a HF. I'll add that one to my list for next time I make a run down to the coast or to NOLA. LOL! Ain't it always that way? I asked her if we could just buy a heat gun instead and she can just hold it further away from head... *blankstare* off to the store she goe...

Re: Poor Man's Bearing and Crank Install Ideas?
Thanks guys. I have a heat gun I can borrow from a friend. I also apparently have opened up a can of worms on the home front as my wife was apparently looking for an excuse to get a new hair dryer anyway... LOL! Ain't it always that way? I asked her if we could just buy a heat gun instead and she c...

Re: Poor Man's Bearing and Crank Install Ideas?
Hair dryer is nowhere near hot enough. Oven at 300 degrees or a propane torch should do the trick. Thanks. I must've misunderstood a previous post in this thread and thought I was getting it warm enough. I found a new cover and hopefully it will be here by next weekend and I can try this. I need to...

Re: Poor Man's Bearing and Crank Install Ideas?
Alright, so I froze the bearings for about 36 hours, broke out the hair dryer and got the transmission cover nice and hot, tried to slip the bear in and...nothing. Fit about as well as it did with both at room temperature. Even had everything nice and slick with a coating of oil. So I decided to try...

Re: Tire Sizing
Awesome, thanks for the quick and easy to understand info. Cool. Thanks Wheelman. So a 90/90 would be (90/25.4)= 3.54 * .9 = 3.19 which is too big. So a 80/90 is the biggest I would want to go if using a metric tire, no? The 2.75 and 3" in English is referring to tire HEIGHT, no? Just want to k...

Tire Sizing
Greetings fellow forumista's. Yet another newb question for anyone with the know and the patience. I have to put new tires on the '87 Spree rebuild and my lack of knowledge has come into play again. I am thinking of going 2.75" in the front and 3" in the rear. However, I'm kind of a heavy ...

Battery Size Question - 1987 Spree
Is the battery box/battery the same size on the 84-85 as it is on the 86-87? Looking at a battery and it lists it as being for an 84-85, so I wasn't sure.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Poor Man's Bearing and Crank Install Ideas?
I definitely plan on buying one of those in the future, but as the title of the thread states, I am looking for the Poor Man's solution, heh. Spending an unexpected $2k in the last 2 months on vehicles that wasn't in the budget has really screwed me up. Ready to get her running and running right so ...

Re: Poor Man's Bearing and Crank Install Ideas?
Thanks Bear. I couldn't tell from the scan of the service manual and unfortunately took less pictures than I should have when tearing her down. Trying to heed your advice and be patient during the rebuild so I can avoid as many mistakes as possible. Better to put the bearing in the freeze for severa...

The heat will not effect the oil seals?Bear45-70 wrote:Better to put the bearing in the freeze for several hours then use a heat gun (or a hair dryer) to heat the case in the bearing area and the bearing should drop in. Pounding on bearings is never a good idea.

Re: Poor Man's Bearing and Crank Install Ideas?
Thanks baka, I really appreciate the advice. I can't wait for this weekend to get here. Hopefully some of you guys will be around this weekend as I'm sure I'll run into something strange with my luck.
