Re: Crankcase seal leaking?

Thanks to a couple of days of warm temperatures here in North Texas, I was able to pull apart, clean, wire brush, and Emory, all the belt running surfaces. I even neutralized the rust that was in places that I couldn't get to by hand.Everything is now free of rust and burrs, and hopefully I won't ha...

Re: Crankcase seal leaking?

I would account for the premature wear as being due to good old fashioned rust! Previous owner said that the last time it ran (before I "inherited" it) everything was OK. But he got tired of replacing turn signal and brake light lenses, and batteries, from his grandkids constantly laying i...

Re: Crankcase seal leaking?

Thanks for the quick response. I was just opening up my service manual when I saw that you have sent a response. My manual shows that a standard belt width is 11.4 mm, with a limit down to a 10.4 mm. So my belt has far exceeded those limits. Also, it's showing the clutch shoe thickness of being 3.5 ...

Re: Crankcase seal leaking?

I finally put on some heavier clothes, and went out into the cold garage just pull down my Elite scooter to see if I could figure out what I need besides a new belt. No doubt in my mind my belt is kaput, as I cannot even come close to the measurements that Wheelman-111 gave me as a guide. You are st...

Re: Crankcase seal leaking?

Thanks for the tips and the advice. And yes, I do have metric calipers that are extremely handy when working on imports of all kinds (as you well know). It was 22 degrees this morning when I woke, or I would have pulled the scooter apart to see what I have. It will have to wait until we get some mor...

Re: Crank Seals Vs. Rich Running

I probably could have resolved the problem a lot faster had the carb I bought from a supplier in Hing Kong been the right one. But the one they sent me had the bistarter on the inside towards the center line of the bike, and NOT on the outside. The bistarter interfered with the suspension and wouldn...

Re: Crankcase seal leaking?

The belt seems to be the unanimous cause from the good folks who responded to my posting. I do appreciate everyone's thoughts and responses. I'll get a new belt on order and headed this way, and hopefully I'll never have to deal with this issue again.

Re: Crank Seals Vs. Rich Running

In reading all my posting from about a year ago on my rich running condition, I did finally solve the problem. Not only is it weird and unique, but I'll bet that I could never duplicate it again if I tried. Maybe some of you are experiencing the same problem, and I'll tell you what I had finally fou...

Crankcase seal leaking?

I have a very low mileage, 1989 Elite with what I believe to be is a leaking crankcase seal on the left hand side of the engine. (The side with the drive belt and clutch on it.)I say this because on two occasions, I had to remove the cover, and found it to be coated with a black, very fine "pow...

Re: Honda Aero Will not start!

1) See if there is any difference any difference with the exhaust completely removed. (Maybe it is plugged.) If it starts, there's your problem.....blocked exhaust. Don't run it for very long minus the exhaust system. 2) Be sure the carb slide in installed properly and will travel up and down in the...

Re: Holes are for what?

I guess I should have looked before I leaped on this one I think. But it was late and I was tired when I posted it initially. Had I got down on the floor after I installed the side panel and looked up, I would have seen that both carb adjusting screws can be accessed from the forward most hole. The ...

Re: Holes are for what?

Thank you to everyone for the compliments on my work, and for the enlightenment on the holes. My only doubt would be that the holes are so far apart, yet the carb adjusting screws are only 1/2" apart (I just measured them). Maybe someone missed their mark on the first go around! I like the idea...

Holes are for what?

I am one day away from completing a "save from the compactor" type of restoration on my '89 Elite. I've been working on it for about 6 months or so. As I was installing the left side panel, I noticed two holes about 3/8" diameter about an inch from the bottom edge near the rear. I can...

Re: '86 Spree runs then dies

If it were me. I'd bet on the vacuum line being too weak to keep the fuel shut off valve open. I had the same issue with my Elite as you are having. I installed a "press in" brass vacuum hose barb in the intake manifold that I got from my local cycle shop. I initially tested it with a vacu...

Re: oil light operation 87 spree

Run a jumper wire between the two wires at the sending unit at the oil tank. If the light comes on, replace the sending unit. If it doesn't come on, check the light bulb in the dash. It has to be one of the two if you have 12VDC at the sending unit.
Good luck!
