Re: 85 Spree won't start cold

Thanks for all of the advice. I know the small hole in the carb you are referring to and it is open and clean. The battery is new also. I can't even get the machine to start using ether (a no-no). It turns over great but won't start - very frustrating!!!!

Re: 85 Spree won't start cold

I did go cheap aftermarket bystarter - probably Japanese. Could this be the problem? Should I have spent the extra money for OEM?

85 Spree won't start cold

Since I got this machine, it's seen a new top end, CDI, auto bystarter, plug, filter, gas valve, etc. I even got the d*** thing a brand new seat!! I can only get it started with fuel down the spark plug hole. Once it runs, it's fine. Start immediately after being turned off or being cold for 30 minu...

Re: Auto Bystarter??

My bad - Page 4-6 refers to the Air Screw and the Throttle Stop Screw. I'm assuming the first controls air and second controls fuel. When both are dialed in correct, it run great.....correct. The manual doesn't give a baseline number of turns for either screw. I'm sure it varies by machine, maintena...

Re: Auto Bystarter??

Gave up trying to fix my Spree last fall but am ready to try again. I've looked through the entire 161 page manual. I cannot find where you adjust the idle air mixture. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Auto Bystarter??

I'll check again tomorrow but I'm almost positive it was clear. What is the brass insert in the hole?

Re: Auto Bystarter??

Is the very small orifice in the bottom of the bowl? Looks like it has a very small brass insert in it.

Re: Auto Bystarter??

The problems continue. Pulled the carb and clean it - made sure all ports/jets/holes were open. Used a little ether (I know - it's a no no) to get it started and it fired right up. Drove it around. Numerous times I turned it off and back on again while it was warm - no problem. Waited a few hours an...

Re: Auto Bystarter??

Do I need to pull the carb? Is the hole that's most likely plugged accessible if I pull the bystarter? What about a spray of carb cleaner when the bystarter is pulled? Thanks.

Re: Auto Bystarter??

HELP!!! Replaced the bystarter and the darn thing still only starts with a spray of starting fluid. Once it gets started, it runs great But it only starts with the electric start if it hasn't been sitting for more than a few minutes. New tires, engine, ignition coil, CDI, plug and bystarter but this...

Re: Auto Bystarter??

Thanks - don't know why Honda calls it an auto bystarter when it's just the choke!!! Smart advice about a spray bottle with gas/oil mix. On the 86, it's all original. On the 85, I put on a new top end, fuel valve, ignition coil, and CDI so I'm guessing it has to be the choke in both. Looking on eBay...

Auto Bystarter??

We have an 86 Spree at our cabin. It is kick start. For as long as I can remember, it's only started after a small squirt of starting fluid in the carb. You can try kick started it for ever but it won't start without a small shot of ether. Once it's running, it's start on it's own all day long. Unfo...
