Took the muffler down to the shop and blew it back through the exhaust tip. A bunch of very small rust flakes came out the end of the J-pipe. Solved the problem. Got the low end power back.

I appreciate everybody's input. Before I flush it again or try to fire-clean it, I'm going to take the muffler down to a local auto shop and try blowing it out with their high pressure air. It occurred to me that perhaps some carbon or rust flakes are partially blocking the baffles. However, not kno...

Possible Plugged Muffler

I'm having some problems with my '87 SE50 after doing a chemical flush of the muffler following a process similar to what has been described in several posts. I plugged the end of the J-pipe with a cork and poured liquid lye in through the muffler tip, which I then plugged with another cork. I shook...

Actually, I believe that the "P" in SE50P stands for 'ped, as in moped. This would seem to make sense considering that, per the owner's manual, the SE50P has a rated top speed of 30 mph.

In case you haven't seen this, here's a link to a great explanation of the function of the variator.

SE50 Air Box Mod

The cover to the air box on my '87 SE50 has a "snorkel" mounted on the inside. I've been advised to take it out. Any idea if doing so helps performance? Would I need to richen the mix, e.g., adjust the needle valve, to compensate? Thanks!

No, actually I do have an Elite "S" (the factory decal says so).

As far as I can tell, in 1987 there was the SE50 (Elite S) and the SE50P (Elite). Per the owner's manual, the SE50 had a top speed of 38mph, while the SE50P could go 30.

So, was the SE50 only produced for one year?

1987 SE50

I recently bought a 1987 SE50 Elite "S" and I'm sure glad I found this forum. I'm hoping that a service manual will be posted sometime. If not, I may buy one and send it in for posting. Question - Is the 1987 SE50 a one-year only configuration? I've looked at the manuals for the '87 Spree ...

In the meantime, which manual would be more applicable: the '87 Spree or the '88 SA50? Thanks!

I too could really use an SE50 manual.
