Yeah, having bad reeds will make it not start. After I rebuilt the top-end on my '86 Spree, I kept trying to fire the thing up, to no avail. I was getting very angry at the little scooter, until I took a deep breath and did some thinking. Turns out I forgot to re-install the reed valve. I put it bac...

Hmm...I've tried that several times....something good must be stuck up there......I'll gonna soak it and blow it again....and again....and again until the dang thing clears out. On a positive note, the bike runs rather nicely using the bystarter enrichment circuit in place of the idle jet (I know, i...

Well, I'm not one of the experts on this forum, but I'm guessing that if the bike was seized and you finally got it freed up, you have some damage inside of your cylinder. I'd take the whole top end apart and verify the piston is fine, the rings are fine (not stuck!), the cylinder wall is fine and n...

I don't know why I didn't think of it, but Bear, you got it right. Just as a test, I pulled the plug to the bystarter (to test the theory that my bystarter enrichment circuit was substituting my idle circuit) and fired it up. I let it idle for about 5 minutes....which is longer than it ever has befo...

Ok, update for everyone. I installed a brand, spankin' new float-valve in the carb. I also checked the bystarter (works fine, by the way). I was in doubt as to my piston-ring installation job (first time I've done it), so I took the engine apart, checked them, and honed the cylinder (I didn't do it ...

Oh, I will. Once it soaks for a couple of days, I'm going to blow it out with 120 psi. Then, maybe I'll soak it again for another day, and blow it out again. Then, I'll rinse with some more carb cleaner. Then, I'll check the float level (not that I can do much adjusting on these Sprees), and see if ...

I'm not very familiar with the elite engine, but I imagine that the brake switch is the only safety interlock as a barrier to starting. That and your kill switch, and ignition. If you're getting spark, that means that she ready to fire up. Also, you may want to check out the service manuals in the T...

Ok, I'm a beginner here with 2 stroke engines, but I was having the same problem. Just remember: air, gas, spark, compression. Without your reed-valves on, your compression will be nil (oh, and your engine will be impossible, I mean impossible, to start). 2-strokes do not have any valves to hold the...

Flooding out....PO job maybe?
Ok, so, I've taken my carb apart for the 10th time. Getting quite good at it. Now, my Spree seems to flooding out after a couple minutes of idling, or after a few seconds of throttling (whichever comes first). I was wondering if anybody knew how to check to see if the idle (pilot) jet is damaged. I'...

Thanks for the suggestion, but, sadly, I also tried to run it with the gas cap off, thinking that it might be vapor lock. No luck. BTW, with the idle jet, whenever I run a small wooden rod (kind of like a little toothpick) into it, it hits something hard. I can't seem to get it out with carb cleaner...

Oh, I forgot to add that, thinking it may be flooding the engine, after it wouldn't run anymore (right after no amount of throttle feathering could keep it alive), I quickly unscrewed the drain plug on the carb and let out a fair amount of gasoline, then screwed it back in. The bike fired right up a...
