It's been awhile since i had one apart.
You might need to unhook it from the gear, put spring into place and then use screwdriver to hook it back onto the gear after gear is in place. It can be tricky, good luck!

Try to get in there with a screwdriver and push the big spring into position. It is under the gear preventing the gear from going all the way down.

I did rings on my 87 awhile back and had the marks facing down. It acted the same as yours is. Flipped them and it started right up. If everything else is good it's worth a shot to check.

The ONLY way is to spend an evening stripping and splitting the cases, knock out the bearings, and wash and reassemble with new parts
