I've been trying a new starting method for the past week or so. I turn off the engine switch, twist the throttle about 1/8 of a turn and hold it while I hit the start button for about a 3 seconds. Then wait about 5 seconds. Then turn on the engine switch and just hit the start button. Starts up imme...

I added a simple (and very free) plastic milk crate to my Spree the day I got it. It holds my rain cover, for one thing. Easily carries groceries. I take packages to the PO in it. It's great! I purchased one of those spider net bungy things at Walmart to put over the top so things don't go flying ou...

I only got a single worn key with my '85 Spree so I took a ride to the Honda
cycle dealer a few miles away.

He only had to look at the key to get the # off of it. A few minutes later he came back and handed me the new key. A bit longer... like a regular car key.

$3.50 plus tax.

I happened to run into a fellow last evening, right in my home town no less, who was riding (he said) a 1986 Spree. He was stopped at the corner and his signal was on. It was rather loud but it was also up front. On the 85 Spree, at least, the relay is in the back and you just cannot hear it over th...

Not sure on the colors of the other models. Easy enough to see when you take off the cover. There is a hole on each side where the wires from the signal lamps come through. The sound is a high pitched (2.7Khz) sort of bird chirp. Buzzer is not the correct way to describe it but that's what the label...

How to install an audible turn signal alert

I added this little circuit to my 1985 Spree over the weekend. The lack of an audible turn signal alert has been bugging me. There has been some discussion on it so I made up this little "how to" for others who may wish to do the same. The parts are from Radio Shack. Their #273-059 12volt ...

That makes more sense. Now, here is my problem. When I saw that the hose was only connected to this middle port and not to the port on the bottom I connected it to the port on the bottom. When I tried to start the Spree it started right up with no throttle twist... ran quite fast and then died after...

I understand about the gas draining out but I'm not sure I understand why there seem to be these TWO ports. One at the back, middle part of the carb with the 6" of hose coming off it and the other port facing down towards the ground at the point where the bowl is screwed on to the bottom of the...

OK. The hose comes out somewhere around the middle of the back of the carb and hangs down.

But, there is this port maybe 1/2" long at the back corner of the carb facing down at the point where the bowl is bolted up that looks like a hose should be connected to it.

What is this port for?

Re: A great way to instill confidence in scooter safety

When I finally killed the engine and stood up after I hit the driveway, my dad stepped back and nodded. "Maybe we should get you a helmet," he said. Maybe Dad is right. I won't do down my driveway without one on. Just hate the thought of having to eat my meals through a straw for the rest...

Hose pointing down from rear of carb on 85 spree?

I was looking under my Spree this AM and I noticed a piece of clear hose hanging from behind the carb. When I lifted up on it I could see it was not connected. Seems to be coming from in back somewhere up on top of the carb. Is this suppose to be connected somewhere? There is a port under the card t...

I'd like to take longer rides with my Spree but I worry that little engine
will never take that kind of punishment and survive.

As it is I'm keeping my speed well under 30mph most trips.

Yes, that's correct. Disconnect the two wires that lead from the top of the gas tank. Then short the two wires (touch them together... you may need a paper clip to do this as they are covered by plastic insulators) that go down the frame to the gauge. With the key turned on, the needle should go all...

What's your cold (and hot) starting procedure?

I find I cannot start my Spree unless I twist the throttle about 1/4 of the way, hold it and hit the start switch. Trying to start with the throttle closed per the manual and it will never start. Is this an indication I have some issues or is this fairly common for a cold start? How do you folks sta...
