Re: 1987 SE50 naked scooter project

Thanks, Wheelman! And thanks for the carb and other advice. Actually, I mis-spoke. For the pre-mix, I meant the total would be 32:1. I mixed 2 oz oil in a one gallon jug (64:1). I just guestimated that the pump provided the other 64:1. At the beginning, I had 32:1 premix and it smoked heavy and even...

Re: 1987 SE50 naked scooter project

Thanks! I would have kept panels had it come with them. They are hard to find as it is. But, yes, it came out pretty cool. Ruckus like...

Re: No spark?

Start at the beginning; the generator. Is the headlight lighting when you kickstart it? If not, check the resistances of the wires coming from the stator. Download a manual and start troubleshooting from there. My lack of spark was from a bad stator. You have to start upstream in the flow, not the e...

Re: Great bargain find! NQ50D

Dead on sharp Finally, posting some pics. I got everything back from Cali except for the frame and put her back together. Runs great with no issues. Starts with a quick press of the start button and just idles great! That's one nice Spree. Getting them back to a crisp 'pew, pew' rrrroom, purr is go...

Re: 1987 SE50 naked scooter project

Ok, here are some pics of my naked SE50. I already have progress pics on my Flickr page (in my sig). But I figure most people won't click there. So, I'll post some directly. I still need to cover the cut down seat. It will have red stitching! It came out pretty cool looking! I recently changed the b...

Re: Great bargain find! NQ50D

It's missing the decal on the front cover and the seat cover is the wrong color. That's the only two incorrect items. No biggie! I can get a decal from the dealer.

Re: Wiring a tach

Ok, I figured it out. I used a small 500 ohm potentiometer. I adjusted it so that I reads 6k at 30mph. After reading the setting with my meter, it is at 240 ohms over 500 ohms or about 48%! Just about where we thought!

Re: Wiring a tach

It's a two stroke twin. So maybe dual fire. But the timing isn't ignition related. It's connected to the lighting coil. So it's expecting half as many pulses as my Elite is outputting. Anybody put their scoot on an oscilloscope to see the pulses? I wonder how many per rev. But I'll check into that r...

Re: Wiring a tach

Well, I went for a ride. My tach is too happy. 30 mph shows 10k. I'll have to put a resistor maybe to drop it. Not sure. According to my spreadsheet, 30mph should be about 6k (5mph/1k).

Re: Wiring a tach

I got it! Thanks for the tip, Bakaracer! I found the wiring diagram online. It turned out that it takes the timing/trigger from the lighting coil! Even though it's used on a two stroke twin, it uses the timing from the lighting coil, not the ignition (2 sparks per rev on the twin). So the rpm is cor...

Re: Wiring a tach

I checked the wiring. Black/yellow is the coil. Doesn't work there. Black/white is the kill switch (ground it to kill). Doesn't work there. Black/red is the trigger. Works here during start but dies when it runs. Seems like the tach loads it down too much.

Re: Wiring a tach

Why connect there and not at the coil? What is the voltage there?
