This is the first spreedometer I have seen that displays 10 20 30 40.

Is this a US spree? what is the VIN?
Mine has the exact same thing and its a 1984 Iowa Spree

EDIT- just looked at the vin and it is a jh2. So maybe all japan spree's have this?

If yours did 40 without it, it would be the first time in spree history. :surprise:

Not always true Tjamz I have had several honda sprees that would run like a raped ape with no air box. And yes I have had one up to 38(flat ground) with no air box and GPS verified. Most will run with out the air box you just have to turn in the air/fuel ratio screw in all the way. I do not suggest doing this but when you buy a spree for $20 and can ride it like that for a summer it is well worth the risk.
This is pure BS. The fuel/air screw only effects idle to at most 1/4 throttle. It's effect at WOT is at best 1 to 2% of the fuel being used. What is this a Liar's Moon? Fantasies will not work here.[/quote]

I did not say I got my top speed from the fuel/air screw being in. I said thats what you need to do to make them run and idle with no air box.

84 model year sprees read 10 20 30 40, according to the sticky in the tech section. My 84 also has this speedometer. Mine's an early build 84, like number 5000 or so (according to vin).

I disagree, Dawg. The air bleed affects more than I might have thought. Axt Baka-san, who done taught me and many others a few things.

I dug out this old pic today.

That's around 42.6. Give or take. Even gps's can vary by a few mph from model to model.

The bike had the stock airbox in tact, stock jet in the carb. The airbox is not a weak point and is best left alone. FLOW BABY FLOW!!!! And lots of pully mod.

Then why is this chart pretty much accepted by the industry. Remember we are talking a PA series carb, not a PB or an OKO style. Entirely different animals because of the changeable pilot jet.

Greetings:

Sorry for the mis-assigned quote, 4.

The chart The Bear posted has value to help us understand which carb feature does what. I'm pretty sure it's a Mikuni publication. I'm also pretty sure one can't apply all of its assertions to any other carburetor.

Of this I am certain. On Bakaracer's advice, I've begun "Pre-tuning" my OKO 26's air screw before mounting up. It's within a very narrow range; 1.5 turns out for cooler mornings and 1.75 for the warmer afternoon ride home. Besides the palpable improvement in mid-throttle response, I've noticed that when I fail to turn it in that quarter-turn, my temps are about 25 degrees higher in the morning than when I do. (Admittedly the VDO gauge isn't the most accurate or easy-to-read instrument in the world...)

What I think is happening is that the air bleed regulates the idle mixture as suggested in the graph. I think it's also letting a trickle of air combine with the fuel in the Emulsion Tube tower, so the "fuel" joining the main flow in the venturi has a bit more air bubbles in it too. I'll be the first to admit I haven't examined the OKO carb's circuit schematics very closely. Also, what happens on the OKO may not be true for the PA.

As a side note, KyleBo sent me his process and pics for modding the Pilot circuit, posted in Advanced Tech. Worth a look to anyone trying to BBK or Intake Mod a Spree/SB or any stock-carb scooter.

The trouble with posting this link is that, yeah he modified the carb BUT he has not tried it. I don't thing it will work for one major reason. The OKO and the PB series carb do not have two fuel circuits like the PA series carb does. But they have THREE fuel circuits. The idle and main circuits like the PA series but they also have an intermediate circuit which is the pilot jet. I think the idle will be way to rich to work and all the adjusting in the world will not lean it out to the point where it will work at idle.

Bear you're right, we're posting uncharted and untested mods as fact. However that's mentioned in the post, and anyone attempting to duplicate or refine the process is thereby notified.
