:woot:
The competetion went absolutely amazing! The night before the competition we were at the school until 1:30 making both of the cars run and move under their own power. Talk about a long day. Unfortunately, we could not get the elctric starts to work, possibly because the starts were made for upwards of 15hp engines

So next year i believe were going to look for a smaller starter. I've already gutted my Spree engine, which should be a near perfect fit for the 1.3hp 35cc honda :geekdance:

So in trying to make the electric start work on the new car we ended up breaking off the end of the crank, and had to rush out to buy a replacement engine asap. Then we tried to repair it but nio such luck, a snapped crak is gonna stay un-operable. So we put the replacement engine in and shaved down the pull start so we wouldn't have to cut any new mounts.

Our small car got an incredible 228 mpg with out the electric start. Just think if we could have killed it and coasted half way around the track :ndance:

Our other car we had to throw a new 5hp motor on because its all we had left over. The other half of the team was working on this one most of the year, however they did not gear it down enough and just used a bike sprocket on the rear tire. We were hitting speeds of alomst 55mph in that car  Unfortunately we did not get very many mpg but who cars when your haulin * so low to the ground

All and all we took second place with our new car and 9th with our giant engine. Out of 26 entries i was very pleased

Thanks! Over the summer were going to tune them up and get them running really well.

Hard to think that competiton was only the second time we had ever ran the thing

Anyways, im in search of the smallest electric start anyone has ever made.
It is going to be used for the tiny 35cc 1.3 hp Honda engine and im having a * of a time. I have gutted my spree engine but that electric start wont work because the electric start motor does not clear the engine case  I would machine a new gear to mesh with the bendix but the tooth profile definately is no regular gear tooth profile.

It needs to be an electric start with the bendix attached to the starter motor, like this one...

Although obviously for an engine a lot smaller. Does anyone know of such a thing? Any help is Greatly appreciated

An idea is to check out what the guys flying 1/4 scale spark ignition RC are using. You'd need to find and attach your own bendix, but the starter motor they use would be in the ballpark size/power wise

This guy is using a std model airplane starter to spin the prop:

I think that you need to take a step back and revisit some alternate solutions. Like a manual clutch.

On your path: If a Spree motor won't clear the case, you could press the same gear onto a smaller motor. There are lots of small, torquey motors out there in the RC space, both cars and planes.

The old Toro S-200 snowblowers had a small starter that looked just like a car starter. These are 110V, though, and engine was +100 cc.

well you could make it work, hit up the local hobby shop, they have elctric starters for a mini rc trucks called the tmaxx.
If it don't fit, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.

A manual clutch seems like a giant project. Id have to do a ton of research on how to do that one. Would it be that big of an improvement of a centrifugal clutch?

It would allow you to restart the engine while rolling without a starter, or run a hybrid electric/gas powertrain.

Those motor-on-a-bicycle kits have manual clutches for this reason. They can't be that complicated... whole kit's less than $150.

Just remember three thing.

1) Old age and treachery will out do youth and enthusiasm every time!

2) You will have no warning because this is not a fair fight, it is an * kickin'.

3) You live less than 2 hours from me and I drive by there on a semi regular basis.

Sayeth the sneakie old *. Image
