Honda Gyro X score. Need a piston!

Post by manthone »

Hey all. Been a lurker here for a while; first post.

I scored a Honda Gyro X last night. Pretty rare here in the States. CVT, differential rear! It's a bike I've always wanted, so I don't feel too badly for paying more than I would have liked. Does anyone have a manual/schematic for this thinger?

The top end was off when I bought it, and stupid me wasn't careful when moving it and I cracked the piston. Anyone have a cheap stock Elite (DIO?) piston I could try?

Anyway, super pumped to finally have one of these. I'll get a vid when it's up and running.

Great find!

Re: Piston - IRC Gyro X has slightly different bore/stroke than AF05 and AF16...

40.0×39.3 Gyro X
41.0 x 37.4 Elite SA50 - 88-93 (AF05)
39.0 x 41.4 Elite SA50 94-up (AF16)

Glad someone bought that. What did you end up paying for it?

If you are thinking of buying a new piston, maybe you can buy something with a bigger bore and get your cylinder bored out to fit. I put a 44 mm piston and rings I got from Tazland into my 85 Gyro, by having the cylinder opened up. There was plenty of metal to go that big. Check it out. There's no substitute for cubic inches.

I paid too much, but oh well. Don't see them around often.

Looks like the bore/stroke is almost dead-on for a Honda Hobbit. I have a spare top end of one of those here that I will try out.

I'm searching around for a link for bore/stroke. Darn internet, changes on you...
The guys here found a source for Malossi bore kits that should fit the "X" --> Click me!

Yeah he wouldn't crack off that 750 number when I talked to him. It's easier to ride a no title bike in MO than IA..

I think we probably have some friends in common, AJ. Nash? His dudes in Ames?

I got the X for less than 750, but not a whole bunch. He did the typical thing of saying he had someone lined up for later in the week to buy it, so I said screw it and made the drive down from Ames. I couldn't resist.

Yeah I've looked around all day for tech specs on the X, Mouse, but no luck for me either. Saw that Malossi kit- tempting! I'll probably stick with porting the stock Gyro cyl., pipe it, reeds, maybe up-carb and call it a day.

Ok, looks like Gyro X top end is probably the same as the Aero 50. Off to part scour.

Yup I know Nash. That's cool you got it, if its only in Ames ill get to see it sometime. ;) I was emailing him a couple weeks ago about it, but I ended up grabbing the 1 Mile Special edition instead.
I bet you have a chance getting the titled bonded, since they don't require titles in MO, it technically never had one. That or see how different the frame is from an 84. I have an extra gyro that's titled but not in good shape.

AJ- yeah, we'll have to have a Gyro fest snow blast ride or something sometime. I'm going to ride the Gyro dirty for a while as I look into the bonded stuff. Not too familiar with that process.

Six- nice Gyro stash there! Thanks for the compliments. I've had a few 85/86's- the Gyro X frame is HUGE in comparison. I'm a big dude, so that works for me.
