How to remove paint from scooter panel

Post by steffen707 »

If you buy a scooter and somebody painted a dumb graphic on the side panel, is there an easy way to take it off without hurting the original finish below? Are spree and elite panels the same color through the plastic, or are they still painted on top, and if you sand or chemically strip the paint on the top layer, going to be just bare plastic underneath?

I bought a panel off ebay, and the seller neglected to mention pink overspray all over the piece, funny how their picture was only of the good side.

Greetings:

The plastic is tinted, but sanding or stripping the outer surface gloss will definitely leave a mark. Consider Wet sand with 400 or 600 just enough to remove unsightly pink. If it leaves a dull spot -AND you didn't remove too much surface pigment - you might get away with a shot of clear to restore the luster.

Thanks wheelman, I'll give that a shot. I thought you were suppose to wet sand with like 1000grit?

Greetings:

Wheelman is much too impatient to sand that long. (Probably accounts for some of my painting "skill" outcomes...) Yeah, 1000 is probably safer and leaves a shiny surface, but takes forever. You do have to keep rinsing to checking the color. Once the paper turns to body color instead of mostly Pink, slow down.

Maybe I can just put a chair in the shower and go to town on it, then I don't have rinse, it'll just be constant flow. Do people wet sand in a tub of water? That would work too, never have to worry about burning the material. :)

I've had pretty good luck with rubbing compound to get off overspray. Don't use a buffer, use your hand to rub the compound.

I'll try the rubbing compound first, then the wet sanding. Probably won't get around to this for a while as i've got other projects with priority.
