Headlights on a '85 spree?

Post by Mishkaman7569 »

I was wondering if 4656 sealed beams would work in a spree or would I have to find a new kind of led light and mount it somehow?

Don't think that's gonna fit. The spree headlight has mounts and has a specific shape. You can always mod the original headlight to take another bulb. It's done quite often. Hid kits are popular. I have an led headlight kit I have been meaning to put in a blown spree headlight for a long time. I may get to it this spring. As long as you have a bulb that is around 35 Watts for the high and low beam you should be good. Look around here on the forum in the wikispreedia for the hid mod.

The Spree bulb isn't available in any sealed bulb I've ever seen. You've a few options: buy a new one, or use a dremel to remove the original bulb and putty epoxy a new one... use low wattage 25W bulb if you go this route.

^^ I had to do the same thing on my aero. There's pics of how to do the modifications for a new bulb in the fac glass housing, I've also had luck finding the oem headlights on ebay. I suggest removing the oem bulb however you seem fit and dremaling out the hole for an h11 pattern headlight bulb. I've seen it done here and it seems like it's best for future bulb replacement.

These race lights at walmart run right up and can wired through your stock controls, I have it set up as low beam off and high beam on, its brighter then stock and has a whole wire kit and comes with 2 lenses.

I have it wired straight to my battery and not in the headset housing but only a single hole was drilled to fit wires through the plastic where it's mounted, the ground and mount is held on by the existing stub and nut.

Issue with that is that the scooter power generation is based on having the headlight run on a separate part of the charging circuit. There's 2 windings; one generates ~7A for the battery charge, the other one runs the headlight (and I believe taillight, but not 100% on that.) The Headlight circuit is good for ~25W total or 2A IIRC. Running it off the battery will run down the battery over time since it can't keep up.

TLDR: Run any new bulb off the OEM headlamp plug, and keep wattage below 25W.

Headlight and speedo lights are on one and the charging line for the battery also runs the cdi and what not past that. I dont think the light draws that much the battery dosnt dim when you honk or use blinkers that much I honestly believe it will hold up.

The head light circuit is ac voltage not d/c and won't work for most bulbs except the stock one, and can burn out bulbs prematurely. I run an hid off my battery and use my starter. No problems yet, but these scoots seem to eat Batts stock or modded. I put a larger battery on mine just cuz.

The headlight circuit will run incandesant bulbs is all the issue is. I'm going to experiment with a circuit to run LED and HID lights from the headlight wiring. I have most of what I need to do it, just need to set aside the time to test and install ;-)

You'd just need to rectify the power from AC to DC on the headlight output. A bridge rectifier (sized to the amperage of the output) is all that would be required. Perhaps a capacitor to smooth out the voltage if needed. That would allow you to run LED. Assume HID is looking for same DC voltage.

I bet you could make a bridge rectifier from LEDs and use them as running lights

Think you can find a +2 Amp, 12V LED?

easier said you can buy an led driver array and run that, they make an 12v kit at 1.5amp at the local hardware. States it makes 1300 lumons

That's my plan ;-) no reason why it won't work. I'm going to try putting the rectifier circuit before the the hi/lo switch then there will be DC from the switch onward, if not I will put two rectifiers on the hi and low feeds at the headlight .
