What have I got here, SY50MP

Post by keithw »

I recently picked up a truely beat little scooter. Thought it was a Spree, however, it has a kpm speedo and looks to be a SY50MP. The engine number is AFO5E-7725xxx. So it looks like a Spree motor but the serial number is way too high. Did a google search and only found hits in Japan and New Zealand so I presume it's a JDM model. Does anyone have any info on this thing? What parts fit?

Hopefully it won't be too hard to get bits for. The general plan is to: Get it running, Jet it to run E-85 (105 octane, and cheap), Start shaving the head. Also quite likely a tuned pipe, porting and trans work along the way. It was free and I don't plan to spend much on it. Should be fun.

you have a weird bike my friend.

i dont know what the * that thing is, but its not from the states.

Ill ask a few people on other sites and see if they can help find out what you got.

looks to me like a japan version of a 89 elite. Im not sure though.

If you could snap a pic of the stock tail pipe. I have never seen a belt case like that before, it could be like a dio motor. The tail pipe will tell for sure.

Been rooting around the internet. It might be a Pal. Keep coming across them in New Zealand. Thanks for the help and hopefully someone can help with some info. Unfortunately the entire exhaust system is missing.

I decided to finally work on it a bit yesterday. Been busy and just didn't get to it sooner. Took the carb off and cleaned it. Cleaned a bunch of dirt and oil off the engine. Hooked up a battery and it fired right up. Someone had monkeyed with the carb and the idle mixture was way rich. The rear wheel is bent, some of the body panels are missing and some are broken. Took it out for a ride and the speedo indicated 30k/pm, about 20mph. It's running well enough that I'll go ahead and put it back together. First I need to find an engine fan and fan shroud. The shroud is missing and the fan is mangled. It sounds like it is running lean so I need to find carb main jets. So far I'm pretty happy with it. Still thinking about modifying it to run E-85 but I need to sort basic things first.

I'd be interested in knowing how much you need to increase the jet size to run E85.

Im guessing somewhere between 80 and 100. Air screw should be in as far as possible.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Running E-85 will have it's own problems. You don't want to let it sit in the carb for long as it will eat it up. I'm thinking pull the vacuum line to the fuel valve and let it run dry when parking it overnight or open the float bowl drain.

Reminds me of a story. An older person goes into a bike shop to get a part for their kids bike. The parts counter person asks what model. The customer is somewhat surprised to find there is more than one model, in fact there are dozens and dozens. The next day they come back and report happily that it is a "Honda".

Yes, it is a Honda. Looks to be a JDM Pal. The tail light and turn signal lenses look to be entirely different, and are broken. Haven't been able to track down the year yet.

The exhaust was a cobbled together aftermarket mess. I cut off the head end flange and the muffler. Then took some 3/4" EMT and did some bending, cutting and welding. Looks a little redneck but way better than it did.

My friend who is an old school 2 stroke guy rode it and says it's rich on the top. I'll check into getting jets for it. First priority of course is getting the fan and shroud sorted.
