I've kinda had the same problem before.
But some sort of liquid, or oil was leaking out of my carburetor, so try and check around there.
Just a suggestion.

That is a symptom of a bad oil pump. On a Spree, it is reported that the seal between the pump shaft and pump body can fail, thus leaking oil into the crankcase. You can verify this by pulling out the oil pump with the input line intact. Place over a container for a couple days. If oil accumulates, the pump needs replacing.

I have a friend who complains that his daughter's "new" Spree smokes ferociously at times, and then runs clean. Would this be an indication of southbound pump?

If the smoking is worse the longer it sits, its likely the oil pump.

Gotta replace the oil seal on the pump.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.
