Spree fuel tank stand pipe question

I'm trying to figure out how to remove the rubber stand pipe in the fuel tank of my spree. Dont see a reference to it in the manual and it seems to be very snug and unwilling to come out of there.

I'm trying to clean the tank out and have no idea what it's there for or how to remove it. any ideas??

Do you mean the nylon fuel filter that fits just inside the thread for the petcock? It may look like rubber if the black o-ring seal is hardened on to it.

Yes i do believe that's it. It stands about 1-2" high and the whole thing feels softish. i think it may be some sort of fuel strainer and i need to remove it but dont know how.

Its just a push-fit that goes into the petcock port on the tank from the petcock side. You must first remove the petcock to reveal the lower edge of the filter around the hole. Grab that edge securely with a pair of fine-nose pliars and pull it out. If you have a lot of varnish and sediment in the tank it may be "cemented" in place by the crud and it may not be possible to remove it non-destructively.

Here's where Wheelman's rock-and-stick toolkit comes in handy. Depending on where the filler cap is in relation to the petcock, it may be possible to insert a lever through the filler opening and carefully push it out. Try running a sharp knife around & between the plastic rim and the metal fitting to loosen it first. If you don't crush the plastic, you may be able to salvage the strainer. New ones aren't too expensive if they can still get one for your model. Autoparts store "Cone O' Stone" filters are even cheaper.

I went to buy one for my Gyro from the dealer and to my surprise its about a $30 peice of plastic!

Precision surgery will remove it intact!

MrCycles.com can't get the Gyro strainer alone. It comes as a part of an extensive kit full of o-rings and fittings. Indeed it lists for $25.
The '87 Spree fuel strainer lists for $9.87 and the Aero for ~$20. on the same website. Deepinnaharta Honda's prices tend to be pretty close to theirs, but of course no shipping.

The "Cone O' Stone" filters for lawn mowers are around $5-$10, so pay the price and name your poison.

The filters that are sure to be for gravity feed fuel systems are most often found in lawn mower shops. You have to be careful in car parts stores and make sure thy look in the lawn mower or small engine catalog and not automotive catalogs.

Farming type place such as tractor supply will have the proper filters next to the spark plugs and air filters.

That all sounds like good advice but what do you think about removing the old filter? I would like to remove it since it's kind of rubbery and probably shot but not sure how to get it out of there. How and where would I attach this new filter? I suppose it could just go in-line somewhere between the tank and carb.....

Anywhere between tank and carb is fine, Last time I pulled my screen out, I used a long screwdriver to carefully push it out through the gas tank filler.

If it won't pop out from the bottom (petcock hole), you gotta do it Wheelman style. However, he's a Doctor and knows how to do Hemmoroids on Hippos.

New inline filter is not picky about location. Decision would be where it is best to service. Maybe closer to the carb?
