honda Spree '87 45 mph

This is my scooter I bought for $50 running 25mph, then I modified a few 'things' and its running now 45mph...when they came out first back in '87 I loved it and start working on it but I moved and years went by now I found it like yunk and I could not resist not to get it, and it is my hobbie now...I have a shop for performance cars I love to modify everything and make it run faster I built a 10 sec car honda civic si '90 510 horsepower so any questions feel free to ask!

uhhh... what engine did you swap onto it??? :?
is that on a gps or on the 35mph spree speedo??? :?
what is your jetting??? :?
what kind of pipe do you have??? :?
stock airbox or custom??? :?
how big was the hill??? :roll:

Wheelman, your professionalism is always appreciated. I like your 'trust but verify' attitude.

I want to ask everyone's opinion on this. Supposing you could get an engine on board (the famous DIO!) that would give you 45mph. I don't think that poor little Spree can hold itself together for long at this speed. I'm thinking in terms of bearings, brakes, suspension, frame, the tupperware, etc. Would the speedo cable turn that fast and not damage the speedo?

When I take my honey's Spree down a long hill at 35 or 37 mph, the scoot start's screaming at me: "I'm not designed for this!" Especially with my 220 lbs on it. But at 30 mph, it's as sweet as can be.

You gurus that build fast Sprees, what other mods do you do?

I dunno about Sprees. I've owned one, named "Timmy" but only to provide for Hospice care and arrange ongoing Organ Donation:

I do know I felt pretty darned vulnerable on Flash I&II at 55 with that insanely small 80mm brake drum up front. Fortunately eBay provides; in this case a rim from a 2001 and a brake panel from a 2000 Elite. They are only ridiculously small at 95mm. Bolt right on! Not sure if/what can be done about the Sprees' even-smaller drums, except to transplant an entire fork assembly, preferably with a hydraulic disc. There's a good bit of brake available astern if you can avoid locking the darned things, but everyone should know 70% of your panic braking force comes from the front.

The Aero frame never worried me much. Despite the low-bow design, that pipe's pretty thick and the tracking is fairly good even leaned over to centerstand-scraping angles on bumpy intersections. I'm more insecure cornering Ms. Wheelperson's Sportster, to tell the truth. DayWot's blue 270mm shock really, REALLY helped the Flashes. Actual damping, who knew? It migrated from Flash II onto Flash III. No easy bolt-on help for the front end.

Bearings are bearings, and overbuilt for sustained mayhem. Never gave them a second thought as long as they're serviceable. Tupperware is tacked on pretty well, but I can imagine the Spree leg shield bowing in at 80 or more. Improves the drag coefficient, ya know?

i just talked to a one man shop owner that says the 1986 spree can be made to go 45mph, pm me for his phone number, btw he is old school and knows every trick there is.

Anyone can talk and make claims. It's the backing it up with a 50cc Spree that actually does 45 mph that is the hard part, not some engine swap which anyone can do . BTW, when I was a kid, the scooters were all Vespas and Honda had just introduced their first Trail 50 street/trail bike with interchangeable rear sprockets, "The Original Dual Sport Motorcycle". Now, that was old school.

i apologize if i seemed rude, i was merely asking for more information on the specifics at hand, and included an honest list of variables that piqued my curiosity. the fastest spree we have built has a gps ground speed of 38 on flat ground with a less than desirable rate of acceleration. that is on a big bore, up-jetted spree with custom intake/exhaust and a pully mod. due to the fact that the exhaust port is not yet oversized on that bike and a narrow honda-san belt is still residing between the pullies, i do belive it to be possible to do 45 mph on a spree with nq power. all the questions i asked are legitamate. even the one about the hill :mrgreen: some good information could come from this, which is the point of the forum. to share knowledge.

well, that you guys can't do it does not mean that can not be done....here it is a lesson to all of you students, first, 44mm bore kit, some modifications need to be done to the cylinder, port the boost port, exhaust 15mm, have to be very careful when you port the boost port otherwise it will affect the timing, carburator for honda dio 93mm main jet, custom combustion chamber muffler for dio, tu cut the review limiter racing cdi for honda dio, racing ignition coil, racing 2 cycle oil high rpm, 110 racing fuel. clutch springs 2000rpm honda dio. drive belt 7240.the only thing is that until engine reach normal temperature it wont idle. thats it if you know about spree you wont ask for more if you still can't figure this out then you don even have to be in this forum
