Project mayhem

Post by noiseguy »

OK; I've been buying bikes as they come up over the summer, seeing that I have an abundance of spare time. I've rebuilt and sold several Spree to happy customers, but I'm beginning to develop a backlog.

Here's what's in my single bay of garage, right now:

1990 GS500E, awaiting a couple of carb kits and a valve cover gasket. May be the last time I buy mail-order.
Two 1978 or so Mobylettes, one with chains soaking in oil, other waiting to be scavenged for parts or made into a runner
1986 Spree with the goofiest exhaust mod I've ever seen. I'll post a pic if I remember b/f I fix it.
1987 Elite. Has some sort of oil pump issue based on how the thing smoked after I tried running it after it had set a month. Waiting for me to fix and paint the bodywork and run down a NLA airbox boot :(
1994 Elite. Seized piston; no idea how salvagable yet.

I'm hoping to complete the Spree and sell next week, and maybe one of the Moby's, but that still leaves a lot in the garage.

Ever feel like you've got one too many projects?

I have ~$3000 in turbo parts for my BMW sitting on the shelf.
I have ~$2500 in stereo equipment for my 4runner sitting on the shelf.
I have the last half of a $500 order for parts to install on my dirtbikes.

All I care about is the $40 battery I need for my scooter :P

At least I finished my custom computer, and a new desk for it.

The first rule of project mayhem is to not ask questions about project mayhem.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Don't feel bad about the backlog of projects. It's quality, not quantity right?

My projects:
-The Honda '87 Se50 Rat- possible engine swap.
-Honda '77 CB550- assembly has commenced again after above project beat me down.
-1972 VW Bus. Non-running. Need tires. Stoopid relative took carbs off because he couldn't get it running. In storage.
-New pine shelves to stain and poly before it gets cold
-1950s bicycle to have sand blasted and painted before it gets cold
-Honda Civic- timing belt/water pump, oil change, general maintenance

Oh, we're talking cars now?

1953 Chev pickup. Front left caliper is dragging. Need to obtain and install defroster ducts. Headliner. Other misc stuff that I haven't finished.
2002 Impala. Bizzarre starting issue; turning the key sometimes starts the car, sometimes not. In talking with the GM engineers that I used to work with, looking at other fora, and messing with the car myself, I can't come up with a solution. I'm not going to let the dealership play swap-a-part-and-see-if-it-works on my dime on a intermittant issue, so this may take awhile.

Front left caliper is dragging on your 1953 Chev pickup? WELL! There's a reason dude, it ain't supposed to have a caliper. It's rebelling! No doubt it will throw the headliner too, like a bronc throwing a greenhorn! :?

I've to got bunches of projects on scooters, but it seems like most of it is plastic and paint, my most dreaded tasks!

Ahh, the truck has a Volare front suspension. Much more cushy and modern than leaf springs with drum brakes. 350/350 Turbo, Mustang II MC, Dodge rearend, tilt wheel from some 70's GM product. Turbo rims, poly paint, etc. Built it in HS and have been holding on to it since. Been in the family for 3 generations.

Well, the Spree is finished and gone to a new owner. The exhaust mod? PO drilled a 3/8" hole right in front of the muffler assembly. Amazing how loud that makes the bike. I welded up the hole and repainted the exhaust while I was at it.

Wheelman is sending me another regulator to replace the one I stole off the '87 Elite to install on the Spree. Next is to wrap up the '87 to sell.

hey noise you may have already thought about this as far as the impala not starting, maybe a starter soleinoid? hows the battery?,voltage regulator?,sometimes you just need to replace the cable to the starter. im no mechanic but i dabble when i can sure saves money. i do most of the work on my vehicles no since in paying some over paid monkey to do it when you can do it yourself and to beat all there is a since of pride when you have done it yourself. right?!. goodluck working on all those projects and dont spread yourself thin and brainwrecked(thats what i call it when i cant focus anymore on my projects). l8er man.

On the Impala. Yeah, see, that's at the end of my list of stuff to fix b/c it's still starting, but will be the most likely to have a negative impact on my life when it finally quits. Funny how we prioritize, isn't it?
