What to do about no threads...

Post by mr pibbs »

The bolts that attach to the back rack are both stripped and unusable. No threads.
I know if i need a nut on there indefinitely I'm sure there is a fix that is not too hard, but what could I do both fasten the rack and keep it removable.

You can buy aluminum thread inserts call Riv-nuts.

no threads...

Greetings:

Suggestion 2:
Cut existing studs off flush. Drill and tap for All-Thread 6mm. Screw those in with red LocTite or spot-weld them on.

Or grind, drill and tap from top and just use a M6 bolt...

You may be able to cut a smaller nut thread (SAE #10 screw?) on what's left of the stud and run a washer, as well.

im actually doing that exact repair right now. i ground down both studs, drilled a 1/4 hole and i will be putting a new metric bolt from the bottom and welding them in place. cut to size and voila done.

This sounds like the "easiest" way to do it, though i have done only a little grinding in my life(...) and never done any welding. Do you think JB weld would hold enough given the head of the bolt is still on the other side?

Why'd you have to go and post that? Now I have something else to buy.

Because they work and are easy to install. I have a pair in the walls of my 1999 Ranger that the hold down screws for the bed box go into, no nuts underneath for me, thank you.
