My friend just got an 85 aero 50 and the starter motor went out....and of course it doesnt have a kickstarter.
Anyways, ive been looking around on here and other sites and I have had a hard time tracking down a starter motor. I was wondering if anybody knew of one that is compatible with this motor. like, would an 85 spree starter motor work? any help would be appreciated. Ive talked to the honda dealership and they said that the only thing they know to do is order one from another shop out of state and that it would be atleast $120...
thanks

Re: 1985 honda aero 50 starter motor questions..
The Spree starter motor has a different drive end (mounting plate) which will not bolt up. Rotation is reversed from the Aero too.
1985-87 Aero, 1988-93 Elite SA50 will bolt up and have the correct rotation. Also 1987 Elite SE50.
Starters to avoid are 83/84 Aero50, Spree & Elite SB50.
---
edit - addition: There are new clone starters sold which fit the Aero on eBay for around $50 + shipping. Item 110489053579 is an example. Take a look at the auction if only for a picture of what the mounting plate should look like. Sometimes eBay sellers get starters mixed up.

Yes, with all the disclaimers about clone parts vs OEM. Kind of a tough call with old scooters, used vs new of possibly lesser standards.so this ebay ad WILL fit?

Greetings:
Agree with The Mouse, as usual. However are you certain it's the starter? Low battery, bad relay, bad connections, to name but 3 possible alternative explanations.
If not already done, may I suggest you hook the suspect starter directly to a known-good 12V source before ordering any new or used parts?
This from someone who's ordered a few new vehicle starters over the years, only to discover that the real cause of the issue was a failing battery. If it spins, look elsewhere starting with the battery. They've been known to go bad after as few as 2-3 years.

Re: 1985 honda aero 50 starter motor questions..
well it was cranking over but then it stopped and I can hear the relay click when I hit the button so I know its getting atleast some power. i took it to the honda shop to clean the carb because I dont have any of my tools with me where im at and so I couldnt do it myself and they got it running but had to start it with a drill...atleast they said.
