I think I'm burning oil...halp
I'm pretty sure I'm burning oil fairly quickly.
I rode about 20 minutes last night at 20-30mph, parking for 2 hours, and rode back a little slower b/c I noticed the smoke (and oil light) on the ride to my destination.
I found that the oil light comes on once in a while on cold starts and maybe under turbulence from bumpy roads.
It blows
Is there anything tragic that can come of this?
Should I be checking any engine components?
Also, I just found these two threads on oil...

Any insight or direction will be appreciated.

Here is the oil pump ratio thread for the USA scoots
http://www.hondaspree.net/phpBB3/viewto ... =5&t=14100
the JDM dio may burn more oil due to the increased low end.
It says the USA sa50 maxes at around 50:1 gas to oil burn.
When was the last time you added oil? The previous owner may not have topped off the oil before you bought it either so you can't go by the number of tanks you have burned until you have filled the oil reservoir yourself.

Tis true. And with a 2 stroke, smoke is a good thing. That means the oil pump is working, even if it's somewhat rich. too rich is a bad thing too but it's not likely in your case.
Worst case is you have a leaky pump, but if you ride your scooter daily the only symptoms you will see is excessive smoke when cold/after sitting over night.

The oil pump is adjustable, check to see if the 2 marks line up, also check the spark plug for oil, you can back off oil flow, also use synthetic oil.
some people dream of speed, i own your dreams!

Re: I think I'm burning oil...halp
Thanks for the help guys.
I know the guys who sold me the scooter topped off the oil, but I didn't pay attention to the exact level at the time. I'm pretty sure it was nearly full when I got it about a month ago. I'm hoping that I just need to turn the oil screw down a bit.
Also, I failed to mention that I'm seeing a fair amount of oil being expelled from the exhaust pipe. So, when I'm riding, the air flow causes oil to get all over the rear splash guard. I'm guessing that THIS is not normal.
A little tangent: I went to Yellow Hat, the Japanese equivalent of AutoZone with more tires and an auto shop available, to buy "tu suturo" (two stroke) oil for my Dio. I picked a Yamaha can that was around $11/liter and headed oil to the parking lot to fill it up. Then I realized I didn't have a funnel and I didn't want to waste any precious liquid. I asked the shop attendant if I could borrow a funnel to fill up. In Japanese style, they were running to get a funnel before I could even finish asking. (People are great here.) He returned with a box of tissues and a funnel and held the funnel in place. I began pouring...slowly. After a good 30 seconds of slow pouring and what seemed to be very little progress in filling the tank, I began pouring a lot more for a few seconds. I saw it getting close to full and slowed down. Too late! Stupid American am I! I over-filled enough to soak 10 tissues and some of the towel I keep in my helmet compartment. :/ After numerous "I'm sorry!"s and "I'm retarded!"s, I made my way home.
It's been a couple days and the oil level has already begun to drop. I'll be keeping a close eye on it for the next couple weeks.
Take care ya'll,
Chad

Oil consumption will be higher the more you ride and the faster you ride. You need to keep track of fuel burned to oil burned. Then and only then will you know if you have a problem.

How do you say "I'm retarded!"s" in Yapanese? Tip on funnel> in a crunch, you can take a piece of paper, roll it up and spread one end to make a funnel. It's a bit messy, but works.

Another tip, start by pouring fast and end by pouring slowly

As quoted from someone else on the forum, I can't remember who, " If it don't smoke, it's broke."
I'd rather have a little too much oil than not enough any day.
