New Elite 80 Scooter...

Post by dr.ona »

Hey Hey Guys...
i just bought a 1985 Honda Elite 80 with 1000 miles on it. Runs a drives GREAT!
However....
The speedometer is not working but the odometer is...any ideas what that could be?
Also...I noticed that it smokes a lot when I stop...
It's been sitting around since 1992...driven once and awhile up and down a street.

What would you do to it for the smoking? Change the oil? Clean the piston head?

Thanks!
Robert

if i learned anything from the small engine class i took in highschool, it's that smoke means it's burning oil. probably getting past the rings or something.

Thanks...and I accidentally wrote Elite when it's an Aero 80.
Good news though...the speedo starting working outta nowhere...might of just needed some faster speeds to get it going.

I'm thinking of doing an oil change, new filter, new plug...the usual.

I assume you changed out the gas? Old gas makes whitish smoke.

Smoke could also could be a dirty exhaust or maybe the oil pump is letting past too much. You could pull the oil line and calibrate it (best to use premix while doing so) or maybe its running too rich at idle due to stuck or unplugged bystarter.

Is the smoke "sooty" or blue?

I agree with Clivester. Change out gas and oil. My 1983 Aero 80 barely smokes at all. When I first fired it up, it made me real nervous so I oiled the gas tank, but the oil in the tank is dropping as I ride it so I stopped the oil in the tank. Blue smoke with a 2 stroke is OK, sooty or black means too rich a fuel mixture, For too rich check the air filter element and clean as necessary to start with.

Thanks for all the advice guys....
So here's what happened.
I filled it up with new gas and went for a pretty decent ride through Portland.
At one time while going around 45mph, the scooter started smoking real bad.
We pulled over and took a break...and then continued.

It now appears that the smoking issue is over with!
No more smoke while driving or taking off.

I think maybe it's just that scooter has been sitting for so long and not going above 15mph for the last 10 years.

All is well so far...

Thanks!
