How to achieve the polished rims look???

Post by SE50_4_ME »

Well i'm going to be cleaning up my rims, they are badly soiled.

They just look really * at the moment, 3-4 layers of paint etc, every kid who has ever owned the bike has decided to give them a freshen up with there own spray cans etc.

1st.) Could i put the wheels in a caustic bath?? My friend has one at work. Basically only metal/steel goes in there, anything else doesn't come out too good he reckons. Aluminium etc...

If that works ok, then how can i get the polished look like the first pic in this thread...

Many thanks.... :thumbwink:

Yea, that picture has chomed rims on the scoot. If you want a polished look, you can start by sanding down the rim until it is smooth, then getting a buffer wheel and some good polishing compound and go at it.

Yeah a chrome place would be an option, I just wanted to try and tackle it myself first and was just wanting advice.
If it's all too hard for me, I will probably paint them black. (But would prefer chromed/polished 8)

If you sand them very smooth and use chrome paint they could look nice.

True, but not last near as long or stand up to rock, road grime and such as a true chrome job will.

I have a bunch of (black) powder coating to turn in for my Corvette, I may take up a small batch of moped stuff, springs, wheels, etc and try out that chrome powder coat. From what I remember it isn't "chrome" but is very very bright silver. And that would definitely hold up better than rattle can "chrome" will. If you read the directions on chrome spray paint, although it may be indoor/outdoor, it specifically says that it will not hold up well outdoors.

Why not media blast them (or even pressure wash) and then 'polish' the aluminum? It wouldn't be chrome, but it would be still pretty cool. You could wax it and it might look good for a few months. then re polish and the like.

Man sounds like a whole lot of work when you write it out.

I did it to some car rims and spent 6 hours per wheel sanding and polishing. A moped wheel would be easier but still a ton of work. recently I
had some rims powed coated and it was 220 total for car rims.
