The way I understand it is that some af05 piston and ring combos can be swapped in but the cylinder base ports are different so only gyro jugs will interchange.motormike wrote:I have no idea how specs compare to other engines

Anyone have a slick Gyro stand ?
I always had a problem working on my Gyros .
So I made a goofy stand ,I took some square tube drilled a hole , and screwed it into the fender holes , then put it on top of a wooden box .
It is always such a pain to work on Gyros because there is no flat places to put a box under it . and if the break is not set it tips over . I was just wondering if anyone else had a better way to mount the bike and get it off the ground .
I also tried to use a motorcycle stand but it was not very secure , I just got a lift from Harbor Freight but had to get the extra front wheel adapters and drill holes to mount to the fender holes , I just did it tonight and have not been able to see if it will work .

I modified a Harbor Freight stand , Had to get the front wheel adapter and drill holes in it to fit the Gyro fender mounts .

Give you high marks for effort and adaptive thinking..... .....trouble with the Gyro is that it conforms to none of the standards set by the two-wheelers when it comes to elevating for maintenance, repair, etc. The "sportbike" stand is functional once you get the rear wheels off, but..... ......when I get the hoist set up I'll post some pix......

Do those gyros flip pretty easily?
I just recently had a honda 110 Atc but my dad literally took it and pitched it in a dumpster cause he said they used to flip all the time because they were so unstable

Gyro is nothing like the ATC's of three-wheel variety. Those were quite unstable, especially with the big flotation tires giving it more bounce than is controllable. Key to the difference is the pivoting of the Gyro platform which keeps both rear wheels in constant contact to road surface. It is possible to push the limits of the Gyro and any number of scenarios could dump you, but your dad probably saved you certain ambulance rides by trashing the 110....... .....I give credit to all those ATC riders who know the attitude their ATC's can display, and yet they thrash'em hard as they can and maintain...... .........most of the time.........3 wheels on anything with a rigid frame just wasn't made to turn easily. Then Honda-san made the Gyro and got it right. Gyro is ALL about turning and I've cut some lines around the motard track to prove it....... ......keep truckin' .........

When I said Honda-san got it right, not until 1985 with the Gyro S... .....The '84 was the right concept, but in '85 & '86 they re-engineered and got the geometry WAY better... .....wider rear stance, lower tube frame, repositioned seating, essentially everything. They lost a lot of the plastic too. The '84 is unique and "cute" and makes a cool ride for sure, but give me the second generation Gyro S for superior handling. Neither is gonna peel your eyelids back....

The front of the '84 gyro looks almost identical to my '84 honda Spree
So what do all the imporvements honda made to it do for it?
Better handling, more stable or something?

The changes lowered the center of gravity and made the rear wider which improved cornering especially......

The S also provides a better seating position for longer rides.
