86 spree Center stand doesn't reach the ground

Post by Granny »

I'm new to this forum. Or for that matter any forum.
I have a Question. I just bought a 1986 Honda spree
and when its on the Center stand the back wheel is still on the ground
and the scooter teeters to one side. I see pictures of sprees with the
back wheel an inch off the ground while on the center stand on flat surfaces
I looked things over very carefully and cant see that anything is bent.
the tires are the stock size and the bike only has 1,400 miles and is in
pretty good shape. Anyone have an Idea? thanks

Hello Granny,

It is almost defiantly bent.

If someone replaced the shock with one a little longer, that would make it touch.

Bear,
I dont have the spree here as ibought it for my 80 year old Dad( hey thats what he wanted) but I checked the tire size against stock sizes on a spree site and they matched . Seems like they were 2.5's I doubt that the shock has been changed but the guy I got it from said he bought it from the original owner and it had hit a curb so he changed the front forks the body panals all seem to fit pretty good. Could the front forks be raised or lowered enough to make this difference. from pictures they seem to be stock forks.

Help !!
like I said Im new at this whole forum thing an pretty lost .
Is there a page somewhere that explains how to navigate the site ?
because I cant find it. seems like I'm just fumbling around and cant get back
to what I was viewing before.
ANYWAY! I'm still concerned about my center stand issue.
got a couple of suggestions but does anyone have other Ideas
.
And another thing. the guy I bought the scooter from suggested
I use some purple something 2 cycle oil. does the brand of oil
really make a difference ? or is WallMarts brand just fine?
Thanks

You will get used to navigating the more you use. Previous owner recommmended "royal purple" but it's not needed in a spree, wal-mart oil should be no problem as long as you use INJECTOR oil. I'm not a spree guy so i have no input on your center stand.

Yes. Just do like odinxxix said and go to a Honda dealer, they have the Honda GN2 injector oil. You will go through the oil slowly so spend the extra $ and get the GN2.

Yes, pre-mix and injector oil is different. Don't buy the Lawn Boy oil and expect it to work. You want air cooled two stroke innjector oil. The walmart brand oil is fine for a putzer Spree. The Honda gn2 is better and it is only a couple dollars more in my area ($3 walmart vrs $5 Honda). I don't remember the exact number but 300 miles per quart sounds about right.

I agree that the center stand is most likely bent. Taking it off is easy and then you can straighten it or replace it.

If the stand itself isn't bent, look under the scooter for the little square bar that runs side to side, that the stand hits when it over centers. This could be bent or gone completely. Mine was bent and when I tried to pry it straight it broke off. SO I straightened it in a vise and had the local welding shop tack it back on for me. Fixed mine really nice. If that's not the issue then you might look at the front fork area. You said they were replaced, maybe they got the wrong ones on it, which would rock the whole scooter backwards over the pivot pointand make the rear wheel touch the ground. But I'm betting it's the first one, assuming stock tires and shock. Hope this helps.

Greetings:

As BB suggested, the bracket that holds the stand is pretty flimsy compared to the stand itself. It'll hold the 95-pound scooter, but really isn't meant to be sat upon while on the stand. One previous owner's obese nephew climbing on to play boy-racer is all it takes...

Well guys I did checki it out real close . and did have it off the stand is not bent. the tires are stock and the square bar stand stop looks good. like i say the front forks look like stock to me. are there other scooter forks that look the same but might be different in length? looks like to me that where the forks are clamped in you might be able to raise or lower them is this the case or do they fit in only one position. I hate to tare into it without instructions espescially cause I got it for my Pa. the frame and bracket dont show any sign of being bent so for now Im thinkin it must be with the forks thanks

I wonder if they jacked out the handlebars after the impact and over corrected. This would also screw up your rake but increase your leg room.
