1986 black Spree project

Post by Mystic »

I purchased a Spree on Friday that I found on craigslist. They didnt tell me that the rings were possibly siezed up but since I drove 100 miles and it was only 50 bucks I went ahead and took it. Got it home and poured a little oil in the spark plug hole I figured if the rings were stuck that would do it but nothing. I took the side cover off and the kickstarter gear was rusted up, got that free and the motor turned fine. Since the oil didnt leak down I figure the rings are fine. I took the carb off and cleaned the gunk out and noticed the bystarter was broken, missing the end needle and the brass was lodged in the carb. Managed to get it out with needle nose. I had to take the starter button off and clean the oxidation. Hooked it up and it turned over easy. I put a little gas in the spark hole and it wanted to start so hopefully my only problem now is the bystarter. I went to the honda dealership today with the ignition in hand and they made me a key on the spot for 5 bucks which saved me from buying a new ignition. I also waxed the plastics hopeing to restore some of the shine, the plastics are faded and sun-damaged in places. If anyone has any suggestions on how to restore the plastics without repainting I am all ears. Imma work on cleaning the rust from the wheel hubs and the muffler tomorrow, the muffler is rusted from start to finish, looks like someone left it sitting in a sagegrass patch for a few years lol

yea i figured I would have to put several coats of wax over a weeks time. The worst part is the front fender. I guess its because it and the back tailight mount are made of solid black plastic instead of coated fiberglass like the majority of the other pieces.

goodlocuk on the fender if you plan on waxing it off the bike. And goodluck if you plan to wax it on the bike. lol. it only needed one coat i just put multiples over my stickers. Rubing compound is key.

For the panels us nufinish scratch doctor in a orange tube and for the rear taillight housing and fender use mothers back to black. Amazing results!

I checked out those products KillinSpree and Imma see if they carry any of that at autozone. I'd hate to have to roder off the internet, the shipping is what gets me most of the time. One reason I got the scooter is so these pretty girls I know can go scooting with me :D cant have them riding around on a junker :P Especially with me on the C70 passport :D I know I am awful hahahahha

I took the muffler off and hit it with a wire brush handle till all the dead bugs and stuff fell out. I brushed it till almost all the bristles came outta my brush hahhaha It is super rusty almost no paint left on it. Any ideas on rust removal and paint that wont come off as easy once I start heating it up?

I just wire brushed mine also, and used black engine paint. It will stink a bit when you get up to temp. Don't use nitrous in your Spree, it makes the girls fall off! :peace:

Yea I went today and got some of that rustoleum engine paint while I left the muffler primed and drying. Also I found the back to black and nufinish at walmart believe it or not :D I didnt get the mothers ball it was a bit pricey. I'm young I can use a bit more elbow grease :D I am considering having my wheels chrome dipped but havent researched that yet I'm sure its expensive. Still it would be nice to have shiny wheels :D Hopefully the primer I used wont melt off and mess up the black paint but i should have enough left if it does. * imma have it looking brand new before I ever know if it runs or not lol Thanks for all the hints and tips guys. I'll try to post some pics tomorrow of before and after. I am also considering lime green decals and green vinyl for the middle piece of the seat cover not sure yet cause the decals are 35 dollars O.o

--note i was gonna upload more pics but my phone cam takes awesome large pics so i will upload to my facebook wile i sleep and post the link here :D

I think I am going to get some nagahide/vinyl from the fabric store. Take the cover off, split the seams and trace the damaged piece, cut it out and sew it back together. The back strip with the logo is in good shape just needs some vinyl cleaner on it. Thats how we used to do when we did antique upholstry and the vinyl on boat seat when I worked with this old lady that had an upholstry biz :D
