Opinions needed. Is my corsa running hot?

Post by dv/dt »

I recently installed a few things on my elite. Namely a corsa kit, 24mm oko, pg short exhaust.

I eliminated the oil pump and am running maxima Castor 927 at a ratio slightly greater than 32:1

The jets i have in the carb are a 50 and 120.

My trailtech guage (attached under the spark plug) says the engine gets up to about 360 just puttering around the neighborhood and climbs to almost 400 if i get on it for 10-15 seconds.

These are the largest jets i own, so all i could do was.....wait a second....i think i did it backwards.

I RAISED the needle clip instead of lowering it

Just ran out and mega richened it by moving the clip down twice. it absolutely killed the bottom end, way too much fuel.

When at speed the temps creep up again.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I need to try a larger main?

Btw I'm the biggest carb newb ever.

Buy a aftermarket cooling fan. Vt cycles sells them. It won't help a lot but it helps somewhat. Up your jets a size or two and start with the clip in the middle and move it down one notch at time. Zip around only using the pilot jet and see what your temps are going quarter and half throttle. Zip around going full throtte to see what main temps are as well

You are still to lean on the main jet, go up at least one if not 2 sizes. Jets are cheap, cylinders and pistons are not. Screw the extra cooling fan.

again. someone should sticky jetting, bear just recently put up a jetting chart...
The clip position has nothing to do with making your carb jetting richer.. the needle is for the transition between the pilot and main.
defiantly your going to need bigger jets, both pilot and mains. A easy trick is leave the choke up and use a air cleaner and see if it runs better and cooler. It will richen it up by restricting some air to it.
Any aftermarket fan is actually a waste of money. the best fan is the stock S fan. The koso fan blades are faced in the opposite direction so in essence the motor has to work harder to keep it spinning at the same RPMS. Unported motors have to use way bigger jets to compensate for inadequate aiflow into the block. For instance, my ported motors for a 72 uses 48- 130/135 , unported i has used in the past anywhere from 52/55 - 132/135. Also jetting has alot to do with your pipe, gears , if your over heavy on weights or dead center springs..
what may work for other usually dont work for yourself, it may be close but its al lin the tuning .
this is what i tell everyone who i have taked to about tuning.
"your bike tells you exactly what it needs, you just need to learn how to listen"

alos remember the way you ride your bike has alot to do with the temp. They do get better with time once the difference in expansion and shrinkage between the piston and bore equals out. thats why its so important to really break in corsa very slowly. no stress or loads . Did you check your compression?
good luck and keep trying!

Actually the controls part throttle fuel flow.

Sometimes there are just to many cooks n the kitchen here...lol
that should enlighten people who are into really understanding how a carb works!

I can't even count how many times I've looked back on that chart. One of the most helpful things in carb tuning!

dont forget to switch to a colder plug too. if your still using the stock bpr6hsa plug go to a br8hs or b8hs plug.
Nothing like getting stroked!

I was running the plug that came with the corsa kit.

Ordered some larger jets today as well as a box of B8HCS plugs.

Thanks for the advice dudes! I put that carb tuning graphic on my phone in case i need to think about things in the garage :surprise: :coolcruise:

Also Tru72, thanks for the info! I havent checked the compression yet. I should probably go buy a guage and check!
