I got a 1985 Honda Aero 50 What the * do I do now???

Post by maxreverb »

Hello fellow Scooter enthusiasts, i recently count myself in your number!

Very recently it has come to my attention that I love scooters. I have no experience scooting, have never even yet
ridden a scooter, but I can't wait to get going.

I really want to learn everything I can about them and I apologize if this covers previous threads, I
just want to do eveything I can to treat my girl oh so right. Like Elvis I wanna TCB baby!

So far I have been reading a s*** ton reveiws and emailing with a bunch of mostly sketchy CL people
trying to get a good running mean machine for 300-400 hundred so I can get around.
Me and my gf had just got a car for 1,500 and a week later the engine blew up, f*** that s***!
It's time to adjust my transportation paradigm.

Are you ready my thrill seeking speed addicted scooting buddies to take a trip though the rabbit hole?

This is where my story really gets awesome. So I settle on this 1985 honda aero 50 with a windsheild and a basket, and I have been emailing back and forth
questions with the owner for about a week. She says it runs great but just needs a new battery. the 85 is the one without the kick start. It's a one owner bike she said she bought it new off the lot in 1989.
it has 1,611 miles on it. She said she had the carb fixed and always drains the gas out of the carb when it sits.
I have a good feeling about it and like that what i read about it, thinking it would be cool to upgrade it a bit.
I decide to buy it and I go to the bank to get the money out. I'm very excited as I've had scooter fever for about three weeks
and have been scouring CL lookng for that special lady to give me my first ride and now I'm finally gonna go get some.
I get back to my house and the phone rings. It's the cool chick that's selling the Honda. She tells me that it just came to her that I should have the bike and I can just come and take it! My jaw drops to the floor. She says she's leaving for a party in a couple of hours but i can come get it before then or the next day. I get my drummer to come out with his truck and we go get the scooter! Totally amazing, nicest lady in the world. If you are reading this amazing stranger I love you!
I ordered a helmet and some other gear and can't wait to get riding but this is my new baby and I want to not make some stupid mistake that might screw it up since I'm completely ignorant so please motorpyschos any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Greetings:

Congratulations and welcome!
Get a new spark plug, (NGK BPR6 HSA, or an 8 if your riding is all at WOT.) order a spare belt, and ride it around for awhile until you determine if it has any "issues". Consider a set of 3.00 tires to replace that crack-prone 1984-vintage rubber. As you go, make mental notes of what you wish it could do better during your routine rides. That will guide your Modding Madness, a little.

Thanks guys, I'm lucky enough to live in Sarasota FL, where we have I found out today a scooter Garage/junkyard called MR Moped, cool place.
Saw a gorgeous 70's Honda passprt in the junkyard. I got a new battery and a new spark plug. Today's mission is try and drain the nail polish i mean old gas out of the tank. Really not looking forward to a shot in the mouth, but not sure how else to accomplish this.

Thanks for the tips, def will get the air filter. Also found out i can get the front signal plastic pieces still from honda so thats sweet.

That Orange Juice looks great!

If you give a gentle suck on the vacuum side of the petcock, gas will flow. No need to siphon, but will be a little racing on your lungs...

So I learned my first hard lesson last night haha.

It was like 3am and I'm thinking about my half flat scooter tires. I decide since its cooler at night and theres
a gas station a half mile away with an air pump I'll just push it up there and it will be a pain but once i fill the tires (even checked manual for proper psi) it wouldnt be bad walking the bike back.

I'm so smart i even decide to drive to the store to verify that the air machine is 24 hours since i know the store is closed.
The machine works and I know im getting the battery the next day so I walk the bike down there. Whew serious excercise!
I thought i thought of anything but when i got there my heart broke when the nozzle of the air machine was too big to fit in the little wheels to
get the air it. SUck city! Had to push all the way back home, did I say I was smart, I'm a retard! I got my exercise that night!
Can someone tell em how to fill these tires please?

Pick your self up a kicker cover so you can kick start it. You will need a kicker cover with all the guts and the corresponding drive face.

It has to be an 1986 or 1987 kick starter. The 1983 and '84 were totally different.

My bike is an 1985 at least according to the original title and reg. Sadly it's the only one they made with no KICK START.

Okay Cool now i see what you mean I can install a kick start from the 86 or 87 that's pretty neat. That sounds like a good project once i get going.
