86 stock Spree

Welp got my rings in today, got them installed correctly and she started up with lots of white smoke. let her heat up and cool down a couple times but she wont idle at all and doesnt want to really rev up either so i checked compression when i got the rings in and it was around 100 then after i warmed her up and down a few times the compression was 70-80 range s***. took her back apart thinking maybe the base gasket so i made one and clean and polished all the carbon off the piston and put the rings back on the right way once again. all back together same thing and every time the plug is wet soooo may try to clean the carb tomorrow but i dont think that is the problem. Otherwise I figure this will be my winter project. completely disassemble and replace crank seals and gaskets etc etc I need to crack the case anyway just in case any ring fragments are still in there I suppose. I thought maybe the oil pump was leaking some compression since it was covered in wet oil so i took it off and the seal was bad on it so i switched to another pump with good seal but that still didnt help the compression. Maybe my homemade gasket isnt any good or the head gasket is too flat. Will heat cycle it a few more times and clean the carb and hope for the best otherwise its overhaul time...with over 8000 miles it couldnt hurt I reckon :(

i was looking at some pics, would putting the head on the wrong way cause the compression to be lower?

thinking yes, would the gasket even line up? and how would you put the exhaust on if it was backwards? :shock: the exhaust outlet goes forward.

no the cylinder and everything is right but not sure if the head is. the chamber being perfectly round and the gasket fitting any way you put it on there I couldnt remember exactly how it was supposed to be. I found a pic of my shroud where the engine had overheated and melted so i got my other head and the way it was on there is not the way i have it on now lol

don't think the head being on in the wrong orientation would bother compression. just air flow for cooling.

thats what I thought as well but I just went out and took everything back off so i could try the head in a different orientation. still same thing. other than base and head gasket the only other thing that i can think of that would give me low compression would be a bad reed gasket or a problem with the reeds guess i will try that tomorrow. I know the rings, cylinder and piston are good and installed correctly. I should order a base and head gasket but i might as well order a whole kit just in case and I can trace all of them so i can make copies in the future :D I am just having terrible luck lately hahahha

sure your comp gauge is good?? Mine just stopped holding pressure today. apparently the rubber seat inside disintegrated.

it should be i got it like 2 months or so ago so yea i am sure its good lol will probably just take the motor off tomorrow and go over it with a magnifing glass hahah i could have it apart and back together in a few hours but i dont have the gaskets to replace.

Are you holding the throttle wide open when you crank it to test compression?

I sure am :D when i crank it it only has half power even at WOT and dies when i let go of the throttle and spits and sputters at around 1/8 to 1/4th

bummer about the comp. at least you have a winter project to keep you busy, and you still have eve to ride around on for the rest of riding season. :smile:

:D this is true dun rite, but if you have read my posts you know I can't just forget about something that is bugging me I will worry myself silly tinkering with it till I figure it out :P it may be the best thing to do is break it down this winter and completely rebuild but in the mean time I am at least gonna take her off and inspect some stuff maybe make a gasket for the reeds just for giggles. can't ride the Eve for a few days waiting for a vw beetle exhaust gasket, the stock gasket leaks fluid around the header :(

made paper gaskets for intake today and still leaked gas so i went to autozone and got some rubber fiber gasket material and tore the thing apart and made a base gasket and intake gaskets.I didnt check but the base gasket from the old engine had stuck to the base of the cylinder :D so i had 2 gaskets on there, scraped the old gasket off and traced it. put it all back together and my compression increased to around 90 cold yay cranked up her ran a little better but still leakage around the intake gaskets soooo as bad as i hate it i put some rtv on the gaskets for the intake and bolted it down I figure if that seals it up and solves my problem i can just order a gasket set and reado the entire thing this winter :D or temporarily fix and sell that b**** ahahha waiting for the rtv to set before i try to crank it plus it got dark on me so I am crossing my fingers :D

Still not sure what is going on with this motor, i figured out why it would only get about half power even at WOT. before i found out my ring was broken i drilled out the inlet on the float bowl because it was clogged so i took the carb apart and the bystarter brass had stuck in the carb from sitting and was allowing a steady stream of gas hahahha plugged the hole up completely it cranks right up wants to run really good for a minute then cuts off like it runs out of fuel. this thing is sooo frustrating
