so if i'm picturing this right , you hold your marked bowl up next to the carb/float ?? and the level should be around the bottom of the float??

NO, nothing that weighs anything or has pressure forcing it down will float on the surface. Float level should be slightly below (about 1/8" to 1/4") the bowl and carb connection surfaces and you mark the level on the bowl on the carb ON the engine.

Sputtering and dying out at lower RPM when hitting bumps... Could that be an air leak that only happens under stress? Carb, intake, exhaust etc bouncing a bit when you hit bumps, opening up the leak. Just a guess...

my guess is that or float allowing in a bit of gas and flooding.
I might know what I'm talking about...

Ok I finnaly got a chance to check float level like you said and the level is identical to the pic you posted while it is idleing.but when I start bouncing the back of the scooter the level starts rising quite abit then ot dies.I replaced the needle but havent replaced the float cause honda wants 35 dollars for it.To me looks like my float may be the problem. Is it possible for my float to be heavy since its the original? Thanks

i just coughed up the $35 , and i'll let you know in an hour or so if it worked

EDIT: no change. oh well..

however , i compared dropping it off the center stand ,to the 85 iowa , and it also sputtered when hitting the ground . i also found my bystarter collar is now seized into the carb :surprise:

That's an interesting observation about the bystarter collar. I have been looking over a treasure of carbs from 'Tjamz. As the Spree model progressed, Keihin changed the carb body casting. If 'ya all are finding the Spree die problem is prominent when the engine is cold, or with the bystarter stuck in the cold position, speak up.

-- The change --
At the end of Spree life, the carb was changed to add a baffle where the bystarter mixing tube sucks air from the carb bowl. My interpretation is when the bystarter is cold, bowl splashing could place extra fuel into the bystarter fuel/air path, triggering a momentary rich condition.

The bystater mixing tube contains holes near the top of the carb bowl. Air is drawn in through a machined hole between the area around the bystarter mixing tube and the main carb body. The added baffle looks to help shield the air pickup from splashing of fuel in the bowl - that is - fuel splashed against the carb bowl sides is not seen by the air pickup. Center of bowl air pickup is more stable against splashing.
