Just bought 1987 Elite SE50P

Post by memberzs »

I have been reading and researching all the replacement parts to get me a bit more speed. So far the plan is get stock exhaust for the se/sa50 from a local shop, and a pulley kit from vt cycles. If i also did the big bore kit from VT would i need a different exhaust or would the stock unrestricted work? Also i havent gotten as far as taking the body off yet, but are the lights (turn signals and brakes) mounted to the bike frame of the body?

The stock unrestristed exhaust will work fine with the 63cc bore. If your motor has the 10to1 gears in it, you should see 50+mph. As for the lights , if your talking about the back lights, there are 2 bolts below where the license plate bolt holes are and 1 bolt under where the brake light is. You have to take the side panels off to get to it and to disconnect the wires for the lights

Thanks baka. so the rear lights are independent from the body panels correct? Id like to take them off and paint/modify them but would still need the lights on the bike so i can use it to travel to and from work.

I know i really haven't seen much as far as over heating issues, but given that it is air cooled and ill be adding the big bore to it, i plan on adding side vents to the body to allow better airflow to the engine to cool it. I have a lengthy commute (about 15 miles) on 30 -50 mph roads so ill be cruising at speeds that will build up some considerable heat. once i get parts in i will start a thread in the builds section.

Its air cooled but a forced aircooled motor. The fan is on the exhaust side. If anything I would cut out a area not to big around the opening of the air shroud. Other then that adding. More vent holes to the side panel won't do anything. These motors can get up to 400deg no problem as long as you use good oil and the mix ratio is good. My 87 elite race bike runs between 385-435deg F with no problem and I haven't added anymore vent holes that's already on the side panels.

I've done 60 miles on the stock system with no mods and it ran great. I've only done 25 miles on the BBK and it ran great too. I would not modify the panels at all. The cylinder has a full forced air shroud on all five sides, the fresh air from panel intakes will not be able to get to the cylinder. If you are really worried, I would do a scoop on the fan intake.

i was looking at it today and realized the vents would be too far back to do any real good any how. oh well it was an idea. still may do it for visual effect though.

I did a little over 200 miles in a day on mine and it ran perfect the entire time besides needing a slight carb adjustment.

Bumping this.
I have been looking for a pulley kit, the only one i can really find is on vt cycles. Has the unrestricted ramp plat included. If anyone here has used it, what was your performance gain as far as top speed.

Yes, you will improve your midrange and top speed.with that pulley kit. Tell them you are going to use it on an se50. They might give you a different boss. If not, you can reuse the oem boss.

Try looking Here.
Those gears were featured in some but NOT ALL U.S.-bound SE50 S Elites. It seems Honda-san ran out of the 13-tooth Primary (clutch shaft) gears, and went back to the Aero 12/34 primaries for some. All later model Elites through 1993 kept the 11.097:1 ratio, so your gear "pool" is limited to a very few SE owners parting out their blocks. It's not much easier finding Malossi 67-6458 16/32 primaries on dusty shelves at the back of a few Euro shops. 7.83:1 with those is very tall to drive with 65ccs. Good luck!
