Need your opinion Should I sell my Spree & buy an Elite SR?

The place to discuss rides, accessories, or whatever is tangentially Spree/Elite-related

Need your opinion Should I sell my Spree & buy an Elite SR?

Post by CNI Dawg »

What would you do ?

Should I sell my 85 Spree with 7,000 miles that needs a top end rebuild to buy an 01 Elite SR 2.600 miles?

With Taz's Spree stock 41mm top end rebuild kit I would have about $400 or so in it

Spree does not have a title so I can't get a license plate for it unless I post a surety bond for $4000 value
($4k is the minimum value the state will accept - it would cost me about $100-$150 to post the bond)

That puts me into the Spree for about $550

The Spree only does about 25MPH and there are very few speed mods I can do to it :(

But it only weighs 86 lbs & is easy for me to load in the pickup w/o using a ramp after a long tiring track day or endurance race

OR...

Should I buy a used 2001 Honda Elite SR with 2,600 miles locally ?
2001 Elite SR = non restricted version - right ???

He's asking $700 ( NADA value is $515 to $680)
What do you think it's worth???

It has a Texas title & is street legal

Also has the AF16 engine (last year for the that motor?) which has more speed mod options + better fork suspension that the Spree.

But is it 50 lbs heavier that the Spree (elite = 138 lbs / Spree = 86 lbs)

I am using the Spree for a pit bike - 'cause I can't ride on the street due no license plate / title
I can load the Spree in the back of the pickup without having to use a ramp which is a plus when I have the trailer hooked up & packed full of all my track day and race stuff

If I had a scooter that I could ride on the street I'd ride it to work & to the store
Scooters are fun, light weight, great gas milage, very "flickable" / highly maneuverable

SO......fix the spree, get a bonded title for $550 total investment OR buy the Elite with title for $700 (or less) ready to ride on the street ?????

That's only $150 difference to have a newer, faster, street legal Honda

Tell me what you think !

Rather obvious which one is better bang for the buck....you can always find a way to load the heavier SR....the IDEAL solution is to have both, but if you can't justify that, the Spree has to go....

Buy the elite for sure. You can have a friend help lift it in to the back of the truck.

I built this two years after buying my first elite.

af16 tinkering can be very addictive.

Go Big Red !!!

Syedleathers.com - Custom fit leathers was the only way I could get anything to fit my 'bell shaped' old geezer body !!
Their single color, perforated leather, full crash protection package, custom fit suit is still only $985
They offer reasonably priced crash repairs too !

I heard Pilot leathers have reasonable custom suits also
My endurance team partner is riding one this season
Hope he doesn't crash test his !!!

hey then if you decide later, you can race the elite in the minimoto class at the local supermoto events. some dunlop tt92 gp tires and a good 72cc setup, you will give those guys on the pitbikes a run for their money on the road only class.
Nothing like getting stroked!

Looks like you might have a CBR1000RR - that's a dam nice bike !
....and very fast ....enough to get into trouble really QUICK !

What year is yours?

Mine doesn't look that good anymore (it's an 03 CBR600RR)
That pic was just before the 6 hour endurance at Cresson
My teammate crashed in the 4th hour, we zip-tied the body back together to get re-tech'd, & were able to finish the race in the bottom half of the 26 entries. It tore up the left side & upper pretty good + damaged the tank cover & tail
Altho I'm getting better at fiberglass repairs it shows all the patches under the brushed on touch up
paint - LOL !

Not as fast as newer 600's but still a good track bike that will do way more than my ability to ride

Hmmmm......now that sounds very interesting !!!!

We started endurance racing an EX250 to cut costs last year
It's still a lot of fun & helps you develop your riding skills - esp corner entry speed

I bet minimoto would be even cheaper and still a whole lot of fun !
Is there a web site where I can learn more about minimoto??

I'm only racing mini's for fun, and have a Frank Thomas jacket....thank you for the share about leathers...If I dont find something on the rack to fit in some Frank Thomas pants, I may have to go custom....I really haven't checked the pants yet...jacket came fom CycleGear....have been "getting by" with knee/shin guards over denims knowing that the first off is gonna hurt....since I've decided to motard the MR 50 Elsinore, pants are certain...no more going cheap..... :thumbwink: ........On a side note: what glove are you wearing ??...I need some badly, and around Christmas time I bought a pair for a friend....when I was there shopping, I tried on everything on the rack....didn't like any of them...please help.......... 8)

The Elite SR is the non-restricted model. 2001 was the last model year for sales in the USA. The low end acceleration would be reason enough to buy it for pit use IMO. The Elite has kickstart so no more ut-oh moments when the battery goes dead on the Spree (something you hear about for the entire season around here).

Judging by the knobby tires and the background, I would say that Elite has not lived a cherry life so be sure to give it a thorough inspection.
