1984 Gyro starts but wont stay running

Post by Culli »

Hi,
My 1984 gyro sat for 4 years so removed the tank to remove varnish. I soaked in white vinegar, used nails and shook . I did this several times then rinsed out with gas. I removed carb and sprayed with solvent. I soaked petcock also but now notice it leaks bad and the filter is broken off. Anyway I was anxious to try and start it and got it running , took off down the street and died. Restarted and off again and died. Then nothing. I let it set overnight, recharged the battery and it fired right off but dies in 30 seconds. Any ideas what I might need to do? Thanks. I think I will need a new petcock atleast, and I forgot to mention at first when I initially tried to start it that gas ran out of the carb overflow so I took the carb off to see if some dirt was in the float valve and put it back together and it does not overflow anymore but now as I was saying it wont stay running.

One method is to soak overnight(after TOTAL disassembly) in a chemical-dip type cleaner that will dissolve and break down the residue remaining in the carb body. Follow dipping with compressed air through every possible opening. Follow blowing with spray-can carb-cleaner through the jets to VERIFY open. ANY passage that CANNOT be verified open will need some poking with wire, jet cleaner or guitar string type stiff wire. Diameter is very teeny-weeny. A local mechanic uses acupuncture needles, whatever works for you. Jet cleaning wire kits are readily available for $14.21 @ motorcyclesuperstore.com...Berryman's Chem-Dip is the solvent/cleaner I use. Auto-Zone, NAPA, O'Reiley's, Advance Auto

I dipped the carb off my TG 50 Gyro S....it was easy-peezy. It too, had the pilot plugged slightly, just enough to affect idle, but it ran very strong WOT. Best of luck. :coolcruise:
