contemplating buying a nq50

Post by meeky moose »

so i might have found a nice little 1 owner 87' spree (nq50) hasn't run for years and has been sitting, but comes with the original 1987 title. it was never registered.. i figure if i can rebuilt cbr600 carbs and sync them i can fix this spree and get it running, lol..
think its worth picking up for $200?
only damage is one mirror is missing, it is almost mint otherwise..

if it's complete, that might be worth it; although you might have to spend a little bit more to get it running (can't really tell the same of the belt or other things just by looking).

Compare the price to running mopeds of the same model and then deduct a fair amount (what you think it is fair) if it's not running... and see if it's pretty close to the $200 that you're looking at.

so i bought it, the lady had the original title from 1987, the owners manual, sales reciept, and sales brochure. took me about 20 min to get it running, moves my 200lb body 30mph on the flats.. smokes alot when it gets up in rpm's, i think the oiler is pumping too much.. which i guess is better than not enough.. pics coming soon :) only thing i have to buy is a new spark plug, lol.. they drained the carb properly when they stored it, they just couldn't get it to start. the vacuum fuel valve thing was just stuck, once i got that unstuck it fired right up.

The spree speedometer is known to being optimistic by at least 2mph.

Welcome to the forums. Pretty soon, that light and nimble Spree will be showing that heavy CBR who is boss. :coolcruise:

A little cleanup and you have a great daily driver!

I'm curious, does the battery box have the cover for it? Those are always missing.

Every scooter I ever bought ran better after 100 miles. And tires make a huge difference. Try to find the money to get them ASAP. You'll live longer; those old tires are hard as rocks.

Greetings:

You bought a Jewel. Nice score!
The pump isn't over-producing; you're just burning off a decade of super-slow leakage into the crankcase. The smoke should improve in a few hundred miles.

What is seafoam?

Are these things ok for running on unleaded with 10% ethanol (95 RON) ou 85% ethanol as we can get both of them here in France for cheaper than usual unleaded 98 RON???

Mine had sat for over 20 years. But dried stored and temperature controlled.
The tires are ok, at least in appearance.

Anyways, mine did smoke alot when waking it up...200/300 kms and it's not smoking anymore (except when the engine is cold).
I run sythetic oil.
