84 gyro getting some help

Post by westy_ca »

I finally got around to pulling the piston and cyl off my 84 gyro with over 4000 miles on it. Not sure if the pic shows this very well but the rings were worn down almost to the point of the ring ends breaking off. And it still ran darn good for being 30 yrs old...lol.... gotta love it

They look fine to me. But that doesn't mean anything there is no way for me to tell if they are OK by looking at a pic ;-) How does the bore look? You might be able to measure the rings and see if they are narrower than new ones. There are probably specs in the manual. The bore probably needs to be deglazed.

For an objective check - put the ring back in the cyl, square it up with the piston. Compare with ring end gap spec in the Service Manual.

Ring in this photo has a gap about 1/8" - way beyond wear limit.

Hi guys.... guess I should of explained abit more... altho not as bad as in your pic mousewheels, the ring end gap is well over the service limits of .02th mine was .075 if i remember right. Just thought it was funny to see the ring worn away to almost half the orginial width thats all... but its only normal wear. Both piston and cylinder are well with in specs and easily reuseable

Great picture (as ALWAYS) to illustrate, Mouse; I swear we should make a
a sticky "The Photography of Mousewheels / aka Encyclopedia of Honda Scooters" to feature all your helpful pictures... Hmmm...
