Do I need a cable lock for my scooter?

I live in a town that steals bicycles and scooters and hates cars.

Do I need to use a cable look for grocery runs? What about at a movie theater where they know you won't be back for a couple hours? How do people steal them, do they break the steering lock and roll it off or just throw the whole thing in a pickup. If the latter, a cable lock wouldn't help. I see them parked on a public street and they don't seem to disappear form what I can tell.

Where do I put the cable lock? Any pics would help. Sorry for being such a noob but I'm really clueless about how often these get stolen etc. The scooter will be protected at home, I'm only asking about vulneraibility when running errands at the store, movie theater etc. (i.e. all places where there are poeple, no diserted back alley parking). Thx for any help!

When ever I'm out I lock my spree when I leave it. I have a very heavy cable lock that is for locking stuff to a rack on a trailer hitch rack, the lock part is also the hitch pin and the cable is vinal coated

No, you need a chain lock.

...+1 for chains over cables...but a well prepared thief has no trouble with either.
You say your town has a reputation, so by all means, don't take the risk of leaving unsecured.
Best to find a secure object, like utility pole or hand rail, and chain the scooter to it.
At least the scooter couldn't be lifted into a vehicle.... :thumbwink:

In a place where the thugs troll for stuff to steal and have the tools to do so, I would use hardened chain, so they need an angle grinder to cut it. And use a lock that has the real high shoulders on it to make it hard to get bolt cutters on it, and position the lock so getting cutters on it is tough.

You just need a heavier lock than the next guy over.

A heavy duty chain and lock is highly recommended over the cable lock. How long is your cable lock? If your cable lock is long enough to run between the front and rear tires I'd use it as a secondary theft deterrent. The chain and lock will be your primary theft deterrent, make sure the chain is long enough to tie around the back wheel and a permanent object such as a pole, bolted down bicycle rack, or tree. Mopeds and bicycles are high theft items in my area too--unfortunately.

For quick runs, or where you are able to maintain line of sight with the moped, locking the back tire might suffice. For longer time intervals away such as catching a movie, I'd lock the moped to the permanent object along with the front wheels.

I don't have a cable lock yet. I wonder if there is a way to use my "krypto lock", or whatever they are called now, form my bicycle?

Aha! I see the Great Wheelman hasn't lost his sense of irony or appreciation of the absurd!

Yes - though I no longer post on this great forum (I'm no longer 2-smoke enabled, and thus, cannot offer anything relevant), I DO lurk occasionally for old time's sake.

Carry On! :coolcruise:
