Im not going to hotlink them, but I watched an hour and a half of cvt tuning videos friday night that had a great effect on my tuning ability. Inspiration.

Taking the cover off while the engine is running will tell you every thing you need to know about how well your trans is communicating. Using the rear brake as a load will simulate road resistance.

I noticed today that my belt is pulling down a bit (5-10mm) before the the clutch engages. I guess im gonna put the malossi red torque spring back in and see if it keeps the rear pulleys apart until after the clutch grabs..... or maybe reduce clutch rpm grab.

edit: I've got a bit of load on the rear wheel cause it sits with the rear wheel on the ground due to the90-90/10 tires

Could I have my clutch set too high? Regardless of rpm, I could be losing takeoff because the clutch is grabbing after the belt sinks a little?

You're exactly right, DE. High clutch stall speed and heavy rollers - OR weak Contra spring - absolutely can kill take-off. Starting in 2nd gear. That took me awhile to discover on Flash 1, brcause it has a full belt cover hiding the pulleys, and starting without a cover requires a drill on the crank nut. You can see the issue on an AF16 without the rear half-cover. Lighter rollers should solve the problem, but I like the quicker "downshift" effect of a stronger Contra with a little heavier roller load. Careful going TOO stiff on the rear spring...depending on the quality of your rear pulleys. Mine are Gin-You-Whine Kymco ZX parts, and have lasted through 3000 miles on several engines, but some brands have been reported to fracture and fail.

I played with my clutch today. I put weight on the rear tire a revved it until the clutch grabbed, while watching the belt. Ive got it set now to grab nearly simultaneously with the belt moving downward....maybe just before. Its running well. Rpm near 11.5k with good power. Top speed unknown, but thats ok. Its a rocket up to cruising speeds on our 45mph max roads.

On a jog you can run the the engine without the trans cover, on a Honda if you have 2- piece cover you can run without the rear.

So far with the tuning of my CVT I have tried a TON of combos, all leading back to my initial combo shown in my video with whitey being the best.
4.5g rollers, polini for ruckus vario, stock zx trans rear pulley, polini blue torque spring, polini yellow clutch springs and malossi zx Kevlar
This is the setup that the belt ran low into the pulley before moving with. And it was the best....go figure.

Right now Im running,
5.0g rollers, polini evo 3 torque driver on the zx trans rear fixed pulley, malossi red torque spring, polini blue clutch springs, and malossi zx Kevlar with a shimmed polini for ruckus vario.

I suppose Ill bump the rollers up to 5.5 tomorrow and see how it likes that.
