1976 Honda C50 Super Cub

Post by Ultraliner »

Im thinking about buying this and making it my next resto project.

A little bit pricey at $1500 but it has a current rego and apparently starts and rides fine, mostly cosmetic problems and a couple of electrical gremlins.

Do any of you guys have any experience with these? Parts look pretty plentiful on ebay which is a good thing ;)

All I know about those is that they use an incredibly common engine design that's commonly copied in China... easy to repower with a larger unit, ~120cc if original has issues. It's also a widely copied design still made today in SE Asia markets. Generic design has a name that escapes me right now... reference to frame's clamshell design IIRC.

That said, with an expensive original bike, not clear that I'd go China-replacement-engine path, anyway the original Honda engines are known for their reliability.

I think the Cub is proclaimed to be the "most produced" in the world.
I also understand that the "Super Cub" is 90cc, but that model was never sold in the USA.
I owned a 90cc Cub this year that was imported to USA by a serviceman.
The friend who owns it now has had a nightmare getting the electrics to act right...and
this bike came to me completely unmolested.
I paid $400...and it is very nice.
Best luck with your negotiation.
Here's a couple pix...sorry about the size...

Common engine swap is a YX140 pit bike engine.

Recently bought a Lifan 110 (which also fit) off a guy who'd done that swap to his C90 and he was getting 70mph with a mild tune.

1984 Melody Mini / NP50D
1979 Simson Schwalbe KR51/1 (think 2 wheel trabant/ East German Honda Cub)

IIRC these things are prolific in UK. US they are somewhat rare; they weren't sold here as long, and what did come over was sold a long time ago (60s-70s). Buddy and I dragged a 1/2 complete one from a garage and got it fired up; it had been abandoned. In retrospect should have sorted title and completed it... times ago.

Thanks for your input ;)

Yes correct Mike, the 50 is the cub and the 90 is the super cub... My bad

This guy is holding pretty hard to his $1500 price so might have to sit on it awhile till he lowers the price a bit further

Hi Mike!
for what i know of a park/fog light is for model 1978 and newer, which is LEFT switch on P mode that light is on with tail light, no headlight, on H L mode high n low beam with tail light, no park/fog light. With scooter is OFF at night time you hit horn button, that park/fog light and ignition key light are ON helping locate where is ignition switch at.
(ignition key light is the one next to ignition key on the left side cover).

Super Cub is model name of those scooters, not only for 90cc, i forgot why it name Super Cub and what C.U.B stand for at this moment, 90cc is most highest cc for Super Cub in most markets. Like c50 or c70 also Super Cub, then till 1982 when 12V and CDI introducing for those boys, Super Cub with Custom on the side cover in most countries, Passport in USA.

These are what I'm used to seeing. $1500 minimum price, typically in good shape.

That $50 one in WA was a steal. Very interested to hear how easy it will be to run down parts. Globally, a lot of these made... should be a vibrant aftermarket.

If what you say is true kevin, makes it difficult to explain the presence of "fog light" on my bike as it was purchased in Tokyo in 1970 according to sales receipt. Interesting explanation, however...especially the "push the horn" for light when off.
