i had a electric scooter that the battery's wouldn't hold a charge so i put 3 car battery's on it , after charging all of then it would run good for 10 minutes at like 15 mph but it lost its charge quick and took hours to charge
-it was cool but useless.
but something like that on a spree would kill the battery in no time, it would be slow. well thats my guess. if you could fork out alot of cash to buy the stuff in electric cars it would work. but just to throw something together i cant see it working

Check out the Briggs and Stratton Etek motor they claim 8-15HP on 48v

Also see the Jackal electric cycle for an idea what the Etek could do for a Spree. http://www.thunderstruck-ev.com/jackal_home.htm.

Another lead is to check out what the Electrathon guys are currently using.
