'84 spree with custom paint

Post by HappyVal »

Hi guys, this spree was bought in march for $300 cn, the only real body work that needed to be done was a crack in the rear side cover just under the seat. Luckily my boyfriend is an airbrush artist and he also does autobody work. Between the two of us we came up with this paint scheme. I'm still searching for accessories to suit it.

Thanks guys! My accessory hunt is getting interesting, a friend dropped off one of those little electric 2 wheel scooters because he didnt want it anymore and on the back of it was a little plastic locker...... fits the rack on the back of the spree perfectly. :D I'm going to get my bf to paint it to match the bike. That's really sharp! Was the floral pattern painted on with a stencil, freehand, or did you use an applique?

The flowers were vinyl decals that were taken from a sample of hawaiian fabric (i have a small sign business so i have a vinyl cutter). First he sprayed a base coat of metalic silver, then the decals went on top of that, then a coat of wine candy paint, pulled the decals off and sprayed it again with wine. The last coat had alittle gold pearl added.

I'm impressed with how that came out. I'm getting ready to paint up the sidepanels on my bike. I'm going to go more skull and crossbones than flowers, though. I've painted a few cars, but have always stuck with solids or clear coat over solid. I haven't tried experimenting with colored clearcoats.

What line of paint is your boyfriend using?

Ooo. I just noticed the tires. Didn't get them covered before the base coat?

He uses dupont chromabase and urathane clear i believe.

Oh the tires, you werent supposed to notice them , lol. The wheels got a coat of silver paint and the tires got covered too. I cleaned the overspray with thinners and it came right off, clean as a whistle. I planned on polishing the aluminum wheels but I dont have much patience for polishing so after about 1/2 hour of sanding i decided to just paint them and get it over with.

its for the best. the wheels aernt aluminum.they are steel. a simple way to test this is to use a magnet. if it sticks it is steel. i also noticed the exhaust is painted. is it painted with heat resistant paint?i hope.

the exhaust was painted with a heat resistant paint.... spray bomb style. It was scaley and alittle rusty so i just did some minor sanding and cleaned it up with paint.

It seems like my carb is dirty. It tries to stall when i hit a bump or drive up a steep hill and it loses power when the throttle is on full..... would a sticky float do that to it? If so, do the carb have to come off to clean it or will spray can carb cleaners do the trick?

I went to the honda dealership and they gave me a print out of a diagram of a spree carb. It tells how to take it apart and put it back together. Pretty nice of them i think. If i run into any troubles, vette, you'll be the first person i contact, I've never done anything like carb dismemberment.

its actually pretty easy. i cleaned mine out twice and didnt have any diagram. theres not that many parts so you dont get very confused. just make sure to drain it first, itll leak from the screw and from a little jet in the back, i put a piece of tube on it to control the drain. after that its just cleanin.
projects galore :nerd:

The carb was cleaned last evening, it was alittle dirty and i hoped that this was the root of the problem but it's still acting poorly. I checked out the air filter and it has a piece of charcoal grey foam in it, is this what's supposed to be there or did the previous owner possibly replace the real air filter with it? Anyway, the foam and the casing didnt have any dirt in it that i could see.
Any ideas as to what else could be wrong?
