Turn signal support repair - bicycle frame saves the day

Post by mousewheels »

This is a repair of a fork top/turn signal mount. Whoever did the repair must had a really dark mask, welded on the tube at an angle and twisted. Goofy fix, that's a hex bolt head between the two pieces.
---
Measured the turn signal mount tubing, then a scrap bike frame. Wow - same dia!

Before:
Top - original condition.
Bottom - splice being cut from rear frame stay of bicycle. Turn signal parts are next to the frame.

After:
Top - post weld. Bottom - light grind and cleaned up.

Funny You Should Mention

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Strangely, I just finished repairing my broken bicycle frame with a Spree turn signal strut... :)

Ah - Ha-ha, I keed you!
Wish I could weld. Can't seem to generate sufficient heat by banging the rocks in my tool kit together.
Job well done, Mouse.

Sorry - been a while on this thread. I forgot to post the completion photo's, but came across them the other day...

-- Afterword --
I could not get the 'flat' spot out of the tubing (right at the headlight mount), because the original owner had welded a bolt inside the flattened tubing. So there is a slight flat spot in the tubing. If you look past that, the scrap bicycle tubing was a well sized match, making for an invisible, zero cost repair - a mousewheels favorite.

-- O/A welding plug --
I have not seen many posting oxy/acetylene welding, MIG & Flux Core are popular, and on the high end guys are using TIG on their loved scooters - there's plenty of first class examples from members, they are excellent tools and skills.

On the other hand, if you can get access to O/A, someone you know has a setup and wants to show you how it's done, or there is a very low cost used rig, take notice, you can do a good job with O/A. Heating, bending, brazing are some added benefits to owning a torch rig.

Well done....I suspect you have held an oxy/ace rig in your hand once before. Not something you master overnight. Absolutely staggering result mousewheels................. :urban:

Thanks all!

Torch has been a go to tool and well worth the $$ as a hobbyist. Took a while in the 'way back machine' to find these but all can see we've always liked scooters (this is before we discovered hondaspree.net). These are the first welding projects. In years since we've found kids love 'bouncy scooters' and are the best - without prompting they form an orderly line for multiple rides - can't ask for more .

Cant take credit for 'bouncy' scooters, we first saw these on vacation and were dedicated to making some. When we looked back into history they were popular back in the 1930's with production apparently started by the now famous "Ingorsol Rand'. Personal highlight has been seeing kids having fun riding them. The kid in us also has fun riding too:smile:

Swing bikes are pretty cool, thanks for the Rat Rod link. :thumbwink: Check out BikeRodnCustom too

The pump bike was built on a whim, for Mrs Mouse, who didn't want to bounce for a crowd   You nailed, it, its a chain on a spring. It's only using 1 leg, not very efficient, but was enough for laid back riding in a parade.
