Hey I've got the same polini natural springs from vt. What kind of center spring are you running? That variator cover with the three screws is actually a restrictor. Sweet buid dude too bad you can't put a bigger carb on

Re: my first build: 1985 Aero 50
Greetings:
VT Cycles' CMR 46mm works out to 63cc, not 70. It's still a big power bump, perhaps too much for stock gears Wide Open. Exercise Throttle Discretion above 50 MpH, install the biggest rear tire that'll fit (3.50) and a temp gauge would be a Very Good Idea now.
Run the stock carb with no less than a 90 and the needle as rich as it'll go, or follow the previous Poster's link to adapting a CT mani to your 2-bolt NB intake. Another option is an Arreche-for Honda 17.5 or 21mm carb at Scooter-Center . Com. They masy also have a LeoVince #4447 exhaust thay should fit your NB.
How was the stock pump secured? You may need to drill and tap some threads into the block to secure the plug. I wouldn't rely on friction alone.

I am not to sure about all the brands...I got the center spring from VT, it is blue and the packaging is all in Japanese. Steve at VT wrote "WG % CEN. SPRING" on the receipt...konaking wrote:Hey I've got the same polini natural springs from vt. What kind of center spring are you running? I am going to get new tires for sure! Do you recommend the 3.50's for the front as well? How/Where do I install the temp gauge?
I think I will just use the 90 jet and adjust my needle on my stock carb. Should I use an aftermarket air filter?
I got on www.scooter-center.com and it was pretty hard to navigate even in British English! Couldn't figure out how search for the #4447...im such an amateur!
THANKS!!

Re: my first build: 1985 Aero 50
Greetings:
The stylish Aero front fender may not accommodate a 3.50. I had a 90/90 which isn't quite as tall, and it still kissed the fender on full compression over bumps. Likewise, the LeoVince does like to tap the rear plastics, probably the storage bin back there. That was a very light and rare tap, mine never broke anything, but just so you know.
The LeoVince model is the SP-3. The #4447 refers to the specific bracketry kit for the SE/05 Variated blocks. It's a very nice, torquey pipe with a top end just around 9000 RPM. Noise barely louder than stock but a lot more RPM range. It's a really good match for 63-65ccs, at least for me. Anyway there are few choices still available. Even the LV may be getting rare.
Frankly I think the Stock Aero filter may be the best one to use. Quiet, all-weather capability and guaranteed-good filtration. Check out the inlet fixture and enlarge if its area is much smaller than a 50-cent piece. I'd still start with a 90 and jet down if it's obviously too rich.
Lots of different CHT gauges, mine's an analog VDO mounted opposite the ignition switch.

Re: my first build: 1985 Aero 50
Back on the build and almost finished. I need to add fuel lines and a battery and I should be on the road. The scooter hasn't been on the road in a long time and I'm concerned about the fuel tank. How can I test the petcock and is there a a tank fuel strainer that I should try to clean out? Also, I have plugged the oil pump and will be premixing. I ground down the old fuel pump to use the outer piece of it to hold my plug in place (1985 has no threads on the case). After some serious grinding I had the perfect fit. What should I use on the carb inlet pipe to plug the oil line? should I just plug it will jb weld or something? Here are some pics of the finished product.

Yaaaaaahhhhh!! Too CLEAN!!
Sinceriously nice work, Dawg. Like the oil pump retainer bracket. Some work there, right? Spiffy whitewalls are a nice touch. That '85 crankcase sure is different around the starter housing.
Don't mess with JB Weld, since ya axted. Just cruise over to Shifty Auto Parts and ax them for a container of rubber vacuum caps and some tiny hose clamps - sized for vacuum hose - or re-use Honda-san's.

my starter housing was the same way, handy when you dont want to put the belt cover back on to test...
if you ever switch up to a kicker cover, you just remove that cover.

Re: my first build: 1985 Aero 50
so I just finished putting the battery in and attaching the fuel lines and I am getting the motor to turn over. However, the starter seems to be struggling under the compression and when I take out the spark plug it turns over much easier (obviously). I cant get the engine to start though. I checked for spark on the spark plug and it looks like its sparking sporadically. I dont really know where to go from here...it doesnt really sound like its trying to start...it just turns over slowly...so bumming right now...

If the battery is new, it needs to be charged at least over night at less than2 amps to become fully charged. If the battery has been sitting for awhile and also needs to be charged.

Re: my first build: 1985 Aero 50
Well I got it started last night and had some issues getting the idle speeds correct. When I thought I had it dialed in I took it out around the block and kept it under 20mph. By the time I got back (very short ride) the engine was revving so high and very very hot. I ran it without the fan and shroud but didnt think that such a short ride at low speed would cause this. Also, I tried to turn it off while it was revving so high and it kept running with the run switch and key turned off. I had to pull the fuel lines to get it to stall. It was pretty nerve racking. I also pulled the cap off the spark plug and it kept running...hopefully I havent destroyed my new motor! I dont know what to do next.

Re: my first build: 1985 Aero 50
Greetings:
Never run shroudless, I guess.
Let it cool.
Check to see if that pump "plug" is completely sealing. Not a whiff of air should be going in or out. Any oil mist and you've found one problem.
It sounds like it over heated, badly. Pre-ignition starts happening as flecks of hot metal act as a "spark plug" without the benefit of actual spark.
At very high temperatures, neoprene seals can fail. Check both crank ends for oil seepage.
See if your intake manifold gaskets and carb insulator are sealing completely, too.
Since it was running until you shut off fuel, let's assume it isn't "destroyed" but sure could be damaged. Perform a compression test.
Good Luck!

Re: my first build: 1985 Aero 50
Really like the flat black paint and white walls!
May try to follow your lead!
What paint did you use? and where did you find the white walls?
Thanks!
Hope your motor is ok...
