So far I've been all stock except for after market variators on my scoots so forgive me if I ask a lot of questions on your thread here. It just doesn't seem right not to try and let this 80 reach its potential.

So, I assume the 24mm OKO and CT intake recommended are bolt on and you've generously asked and answered my jetting questions already (thanks Bear).

What about the air box - will the stock box suffice - any mods needed (holes cut)? Should I start looking for a pod type?

I never thought I'd say this but I actually like the vacuum choke - probably won't last but this one works perfectly as designed. I put clear hose on it and can watch as it begins with additional mostly fuel mix, slowly changes to allow more air into the mix and then shuts off completely when warm. I bring this up because with the OKO, it looks like some sort of pull-tab choke.

Have you thought about how you will activate/shut-off the choke?

Stock air box will NOT work. You will need something like this.

Hi guys...
Quick update and a quick question. I did the fuel filter, air filter (previous owner wrapped the element cage in 2 inch thick foam... way too little air) the plug (the one I took out was gapped way too wide and was oily) swapped oil to gn2, replaced gas and added a cap full of seafoam. Did a full carb clean out and put in the 90 jet. Did both brake cables, tires, and tubes. Replaced the drive belt and took out every bit of grease from the variator after wrestling the drive face off with a strap wrench. I have replacement rollers on order as mine had some flat spots. My question is... go totally dry with the variator, a dab of grease in each roller track, or a hint of graphite powder. I have read all three, but would like an answer from you scooter gurus that actually have an aero 80. Thanks so much in advance.

Dry rollers. Remove backing plate. Install and go. Feel the powah!

Thanks for the quick reply zuphillus. Is the backing plate the thin, silver, o-ringed piece held on with three small bolts? Is there any risk of throwing the rollers out of their tracks? It makes sense that the backing plate is there just to keep the grease off the belt.. no grease = no need for backing plate. I don't doubt you, I'm just curious and want to get it right the first time. Thanks again!

Well, after much hemming and hawing, I have sold the Aero. Nice younger girl down the way in Lake City bought it this morning, I rode it all the way to her house for her, so I got another ride out of it. I told her about the site, so she may come on over.

Now to find my next project. Yes, I guess I have scooter ADD.

Yup, I would say Aero ADD is what you have. Find em, love em, leave em. Commitment issues. It's not a marriage you know, you can just stick em in the shed when you're tired of fooling with em.

Nice work on the Aero! It was a good find and deal. Fixing the bent fork and a bazillion little stuff was great. Yet spring is coming, and you *must* have scooter to ride, plus one to fix and sell IMHO. This year's goal - keep shopping until you have two.

Hey Dudes!
I just got a beautiful 1983 Honda Aero 80, and I am in love! Purchased from a previous owner/ owners who kept it in a garage, running well, and they seemed to know about engine care and maintenance. I have been reading these posts, but unlike the previous owners, I know nothing about engine care and maintenance...zero... :newb:
I look forward to learning, and I hope that you guys are going to be very helpful (and patient) with that! Problem is, right now this is all way over my head (in fact, is there a place where I can get the dictionary to decipher these abbreviations and things?)
Any suggestions on how to get started? I really want to learn how to take care of my scoots, but I'm not sure where to start.
Is there a kiddie pool that I can wade into somewhere???

First check to make sure the air filter is present and clean and not falling apart. The change out the fuel and vacuum lines and fuel filter. I prefer clear lines. The change the stock 88 main jet for a 90 as the stock jet is slight to small and cause a flat spot above 3/4 throttle.

JET, MAIN (#90) (99102-GHB-0900 ) $7.00 from your Honda dealer

Do a compression test per the service manual.

Download the service manual here.

....double wowzerz on the find scootenanny.... :thumbwink: :thumbwink:
The air filter is super easy to open and take out/replace...if the po's were good like you say, then all should be okay....BUT it is a MUST to check it now before ride it regularly.

Thanks guys for your suggestions! I will start there. I actually have the original Owner's Manual and tool kit for the scooter.

RagTop, is "Yikes" a good thing or a bad thing?
