1980 Express II reviving

Post by mmeadows »

I've never done a build thread before but i regret not doing it for my 84 aero build up. Hopefully this thread will be helpful to someone one day as this arguably the most populated honda scooter site.

This is a 1980 Blue Express II NA50.

By the time i thought to take pictures i already pulled the motor ( which turns ). It is missing an exhaust, but everything else seems complete.

Not designed with a starter motor, instead a spring that builds up energy when you push down on a foot lever, and is released when you pull the brake. kind of neat, i hear once it breaks its hard to fix so i'm going to wait to grease up some springs before i do it to much.

i have not found a manual yet, so i'm just going off my forum acquired two stroke knowledge

unique looking piston ( has a factory dent in the piston) which i might add is rather clean.
the bottom ring was stuck so i had to break it free.

The exhaust port on the head is so small you can't fit a boney pinky in it. Much smaller than the picture makes it seem

Was also missing a head gasket. evidence of tinkering perhaps?

I think i'm done for the night, with the top end apart, i have a new base, head, and exhaust gasket on the way (ebay)

I also ordered a new set of rings ( treatland)

currently the plan is to use the stock exhaust off my nc50 who needs a revival as well.

i'm really tempted to crack the case but think i will save that for my other express II. once i crack a cass i know i will get too carried away with upgrades, this revival is for learning purposes right now. oh and i say revival because i don't have the skills to do a restore lol.

ON THE ITINERARY:

now that this motor is exposed and the frame is more visible, its time to go to lowes and get some play sand. I find 90 psi at 3 cfm to be just the right "amount of damage". Destroys rust and paint, slow on grease, harmless on metal cases , frames. (yes gasket surfaces too)

better look ahead and pm martynkim about some parts. ( i wonder what his yard looks like)

The exhaust gaskets come in handy sometimes when you re-assemble you just need a new exhaust gasket. That little bike is gonna be real happy with all the TLC :-D

But how fast can you make an express? Maybe swap the urban express engine for some real fun!

Or do what I did
