Hi Aero 80 owners. This is literally the first time I have joined a forum like this, doing so since I just purchased a 1983 aero 80 and I'm already addicted to the scoot. It's got 1250 lightly used original miles and is as mint as an 83 gets without restoration. I am going to try and post some pics to start. I hope you don't mind that I pick your brains about modest mods and how to's. First question... can I get a few mph at the top end by increasing the length and width of the stock cvt belt and possibly slightly heavier rollers? I figure a two stroke already beats all 4 strokes in the acceleration department already. Any thoughts. Thanks for your time and expertise. Can't wait for spring.

Hello Mr. poofie......and welcome to the board. You've started off well by choosing this board as your maiden venture into forum use. It is an active forum with loads of info available. My primary ride is '84 Aero 125....Ruby she's called....I dont often name bikes or cars, but this time the COLOR and character of the bike commanded an affectionate name. For the best result getting answers to questions, start a thread of specific title, like: "Aero 80 Belt Mods"....I can't answer your question, except to say that it sounds like it makes good sense.....Seeya on the funway... :hi:

I can tell you about the Aero 80.

How fast is your Aero 80 now?

First replace the stock 88 main jet with a 90 jet. It will cure the engine going flat at WOT.

Next disassemble and degrease the variator. Check for flat rollers and replace as necessary.

Never seen a heavier roller than stock, which is 16 grams (measured).

While at it check the belt for wear. Spec is in the service manual.

Download service manual here: http://www.hondaspree.net/Aero80_NH80_Manual.pdf

Your best bet for more speed is an aftermarket CT DIO intake with a 21 to 24 mm OKO carb.

Right now my 200lb self can hit 40mph indicated. I haven't done a thing to it yet other than 1 or 2 test rides. I really want to have a long warm day to change plug, filters, gas and autolube, both sticky brake cables, and degank the carb. The tires would probably make good sense too. I will definitely check and degrease the variator. I also will wait to get the 90 jet before doing anything carb related. How hard or easy is it to remove the variator/clutch cover without pulling the kickstart shaft with it? Thanks again guys... I really appreciate it. Again, officially addicted.

While at it change the gas and vacuum lines too. I like clear lines as it lets you see what is going on.
40 mph indicated is actually off from the original 45 indicated these scooter did. The speedometer is optimistic too by several MPH. My GPS say 40.5 when my speedometer says 43 mph.

Look in Section 8 of the service manual for the side cover removal and everything under it.

Oh and 90 main jet from Honda,

JET, MAIN (#90) (99102-GHB-0900 ) $7.00

I get a discount from my dealer down to $4.77 for this jet.

Mike, I will have to take a look at the mirror again, but I'm very sure the PO put a big screw in there so the whole thing is a mess.
Bear, thanks for the info, I saw those and was wondering if they were good mirrors.
Now, I have 15 gram sliders in there with no grease and my girlish 250 lb frame will go up a slight incline at 40mph indicated. Down hill a bit faster. I am going to get ahold of Taz for the carb kit soon. If I can get 50mph out of this I will be happy.
I might even venture to work on Wednesday since its supposed to be 50 and sunny.

A big thanks again... you guys are awesome, this forum is awesome, and our throwback scooters are awesome. Just ordered all the parts and insured/registered it this morning. I am hoping to be in the neighborhood of 45mph when all work is complete. Will continue to post after any work completed or if I have any other nooby questions to annoy you all with. Motormike, I'm getting a bit misty myself.

My 85 Aero 80 is running well but I would be interested in trying this set-up if it could get me a few more mph. Most of the larger roads around me are 45 mph speed limit. It would be nice to be able to hit and maintain that speed - right now I can hit it but not much faster and a little slower up hills.

Bear, could I go for the same upgrade on my 85?
zuphilius wrote:Changed the belt, rollers and jet. Cleaned carb, had some debris in there, changed filter. Fired right up. Took it for a short run, got up to 46 indicated, got to be happy with that. As soon as I can I will be getting the CT manifold and OKO from Taz.

Going to ride it a bit more before taking another ride to work.

Just in case.
Zuphilius - if you go for the carb and intake, please let me know exactly what you ordered - maybe there are others interested and Taz will give us a deal. Is the stock reed cage ok in this set-up?

Enjoying the thread - please keep us informed.

Taz quoted me $140 for the kit which includes the cable also. Bear also recommends Boysen (spelling?) reeds. When I get some down time from work I will be trying this.

The Boyesen reeds (#740) are only if you are stay with the stock intake. The Ct intake comes with it's own, better reed set up.

Thanks again Bear.
So what are your recommendations for jets and set up for the 24mm oko?

On an OKO 24mm jet at #115 to #120 on the main.
The Pilot at #40 to #45. I recommend you start high and work down
