Grab Bar Fabrication Thread

Post by richdavison34 »

Ok, I'm starting a new thread just for the grab bars that I'm making.

KingJeff was awesome enough to send me an Elite luggage rack to work from.

So, the first grab bar I'm making will be for his Elite.

I have to tell you, the first part of this project was much more challenging than I'd imagined. Although I made a very sold jig, making 4 uniform bends to form a perfect rectangle is no easy task.

After a lot of measuring and hammering I got the rectangle sorted out. I've welded on the lower flat pieces for the the holes, and made the necessary bends. All I have left to do is weld on the arms to reach out to the top mount hole positions.

In the pic that shows the grab bar mounted to the elite, you can see that the part I have colored red is what I've gotten done so far, and the yellow part is what I have left to do.

I can't wait to see it finished , it looks so much like my real grab bar. are you using dimensions from a JDM bar or are you going off the pic only?

Yeah, I have the rack to work from as far as the placement of the holes, but I'm working just from the picture to make the grab bar.

I don't know why the grab bar in the pic has those humps in it right around where the end of the seat would be. The luggage rack just has straight pieces going directly to those inner mounting points.

It even looks like there are grooves made into the rear fender to accommodate the mounting arms sliding under the rear of the seat.

Looking Great Rich, If you need actual measurements let me know. those humps are so it doesn't hit the panels. At the same time those humps it make it harder for the seat latch to catch. Again great start :peace:

I have a stupid question ??? Why not just use 1 flat bar , then you would only need 2 welds instead of 4 ?

One bar would probably work.

I just did it to match the picture.

It would actually be a lot easier just to make one bar. Save a lot of time cutting and grinding.

Now THAT is some nice freaking work... I had a jdm grab bar on the wifes elite; and honestly I'd choose your hand made one in a second over the mass produced one.

-you don't see quality work like yours very often... (Applause)
