A Kinder, Gentler (and Shorter) Flash

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

The PG Long having rattled its baffles, became unconscionably loud. I leave Casa Wheelman before 7 usually, and the neighbors didn't appreciate the Dawn ruckus.
The very shiny PG Short was recommended by VT Cycles' Steve Van Treese as a more Socially Conscious alternative. It arrived ahead of schedule witn some gaskets and a very cool Repsol T-Shirt as part of the packaging..

Installed wthout changing jetting from the (slightly rich) settings that workef fairly well with the Long.
Take-off was a little softer, but no change in the midrande once the clutch hooked up. The only tuning concession I made was a 2-gram increase in the Variator load. Still it revs to 9500 or more ar WOT.
The short seems to support that RPM without issues, and if anything the seat-of-the Dockers power is better.

Definitely it's quieter than the rattle-baffle Long, but still not what one would calll Quiet.
Top speed rollout to follow. I miss the stealthy look of the Factory black Long, but the clear-coated metal look is Tough.
So far so good.

Fuzzy? FUZZY?!
I represent that remark! Blurry, fo' sho', but never Fuzzy.
Pics later if I ever get out of "work".

Pics as promised. The metal PG plaque is genius, but heads should roll for the decision to stick the foil one on a 500-degree pipe.
The adhesive turns into a foul Mess in 20 minutes' riding.

I can't really appreciate any significant performance difference between the new Short and the Long PGs. It humps right up to over 60 in a surprisingly short distance - like about a quarter-mile.

Is it much quieter than a new PG long?

Now, y'see that's kinda hard to say...

It's been over a year since I've heard a New PG Long installed. Mine grew gradually louder as its glass-wrapped baffles packed down. I could swear it's almost but not quite as loud as a new Long, but then again Wheel-hearing isn't what it used to be.

Looking good as always, man-of-the-Wheel...

Definitely report on how the shorty performs; I've not talked to many guys that have them; or have heard how they perform...

So the Wheelman-hearing isn't as good as it used to be? That PG Long must have been really noisy toward the end... Are you planning on giving it the Baka treatment? (cutting it open, drilling out the baffle tube holes, and repacking / re-tacking)

Greetings:

Alas, I broke two sticks and my best rock attempting Long Division.
Instead the outwardly Maraschino PG was sold at 1/3rd price to a lucky Forumista with the tools and the talent to Baka-sanitize its buzzy baffles.

I was afraid I would Hate the Short in comparison, but there's nothing but the 0 to 5 MPH not to like.
I'm diggin' the relative Quiet. Neighbors probably would tell me they like it too, if any were speaking to me.

Now how to improve the 0 MPH Launch?

The Short seems comparable to the Long on top, at least on this 72cc.

I want to emphasize that this isn't a top speed. This was blending into traffic during thhe 2 miles before my exit. Usually Deepinaharta Freeway traffic runs at ~65 during Commute, and it takes a hole in traffic for me to wind it out.
This was at 3/4 throttle or so, turning 9800RPM. Since it can rev considerably higher, like 10.5Kn the math says it'll still touch 70 or so given enough road and perhaps a nice tailwind.
No tuck here, either. Wheelman don't tuck.

Greetings;

Yeah I'm pretty pleased with how ef
fortlessly the Corsa stays up, surprising the slack-jawed masses. My 0-5 still sucks, perhaps due to soft jetting and I suspect a bit of belt slip.
I will re-shim and drop a couple roller grams to see. It likes cooler mornings..

Greetings:

The Big-Block Shroud Hole relocation issue had been eating away at Anal-Retentive Wheelman's tender sensibilities for a long time. Why bother having a carefully thought-out Forced-Air cooling system if half the air is wheezing uselessly out the gap in the plug hole? Muffler tape was a flimsy, temporary fix when used to cover the big gap. This was my second attempt at a remedy.

Carefully-carved .5mm carbon plate drilled and screwed on with short sheet-metal screws bridges the bulk of the Abyss.
Leaving just enough room to thread in the plug socket. The little hole upper left of the socket is to let out my CHG lead. The 6mm sensor ring currently resides under the right rear head bolt, a PITA to disassemble. (Loosen shroud, move it aside, pull the headbolt. Have to re-torque the head bolt. Still, better than under the spark plug, which comes off about every two weeks. Less chance for damage when the head comes off only every few months.)

The plug cap keeps the free end of the stiff but flexible plate down against the shroud. Not much change in temp readings, but I sleep better at night.

Greetings:

Garmin-Girl said 66.1 in warm weather (mid-80s) on the Deepinnaharta freeway. It was still climbing, albeit slowly, whem my Highlander "escort" abruptly braked when the gun-totin' dually cut in front.
This suggests that the Short's reliable 65 is no fluke. Temps stay near 350, seldom a needle-width over, but never more.
Now approaching 60 hours and maybe 1500 miles, mostly in 3-mile commute chunks.
This was at 9800 RPM, 31 grams on a +1000 spring and a well-worn (17.5mm) 669 Bando belt.
Jetting is 48/125 in 26mm OKO.
